met a couple from down under this afternoon... they're going to be in the states for a couple years.. on "holiday".... they bought a '97 bounder to take back with them when they return... and will convert it to right hand drive... ive had several people contact me, wanting to export coaches to australia, and central america....and the mci-9 appeals to them... wonder what would be necessary to convert it???.. changing the door is the least of the problems... finding a steering gear box, drag links, and pitman arms seem to be all that necesasary... input????

Jim,

One method of converting was to cut the steering column near to the floor and move it to the right side. Then a heavy steel box was fabricated from about 1/8th thick plate, if I remember correctly, which was attached to the top of the remaining original column and the bottom of the moved column. The two shafts had chain sprockets attached and with a huge triple or quadruple row chain, the two parts of the steering shaft were linked. An adjustable idler roller was used to tension the chain.

This system was used on the older full sized Jeep Cherokees of the late 70s and early 80s and worked very well.

If you need more info, let me know.

Peter.

The steering box out of a garbage truck is a "zero lash" setup that works well at shifting steering to the right side. Bit better (design wise)than the plate and chain and sprocket system but not necessarily better in practice.

You might recommend your friends to take a look!
