I need to get my tanks built soon!

What I had in mind was to build my tanks (fresh and black) out of 3/4 inch plywood. There is a company here locally that can spray 'chopped' fiberglass into my plywood boxes.

I'm not concerned with doing the black tank, but what about the FRESH water tank? Is there any concern with odors, bad taste, etc?

Thanks alot,
Mark

Of course, a leak would be a main concern with any type of constructed tank. But I beleive that if care was taken, the possibility would be minimized.

A leak is not my biggest concern!

Will fiberglass lined tanks make fresh water taste bad?

Thanks again,
mark

The trouble with leaks, is that the EPA crazed fools won't know if you're
lying when you tell them it's really fresh water that's pouring all over the
parking lot.

I'd worry about the resin and chemicals leaching into my fresh water, and
maybe a few stray fibers poking through my wife's...errrr...

But that aside, did you know that tanks don't have to be expensive?

Hmm.. They were cheaper than the RV dealer I priced one at.. but
that dealer was partially nuts. Is there a better place?

mark,to address your question; i don't think there are any big concerns for odors, bad taste from glass tanks. I looked into all options for building my own tanks and almost went with glass. then found abs to be a much better selection. Are you sold on glass cause of the price &/or ease of construction? joe 4106

Joe, I have 'heard' that ABS was not good for consumibles. Thats why they don't use it for water pipe only DVW but didn't know. Your post caused me to go to google for information. This is the first, and only, file I opened there. You might want to check futher. "I've been wondering the same. I found this in my research at Homebrew Digest (http://hbd.org/hbd/archive/3776.html)

Under NO circumstances should you use ABS pipe for "food" type activity. I work for a very LARGE company that makes ABS plastic. All of the 3 ingredients of ABS (Acrylonitrile- Butadiene-Styrene) are either known or suspected carcinogens. Pipe-grade ABS is the cheapest grade, made from a lot of regrind and scrap ABS, it is really hard to tell what chemicals are in there, but it is NOT certified for any kind of food-grade use. PVC pipe also contains Acrylo but not nearly as much and it is much more tightly bound in the molecule. PVC usually IS certified for use with potable H2O.. ABS is NOT safe to use for food. (especially if heated)."

As for making tanks of plywood and fiberglass, George Myers has instructions and recomendations in his books and articles.

Most Potable water tanks in the Army were made from fiberglass but had some type of sprayed in plastic liner. They had to be inspected regularly and any crack in plastic lining was reason to condemn until repaired.

John,

Ardemco in Southern California has a huge range and they told me that tanks upto their 155 gal were mostly UPS-able.

They make them in 1/8" and 1/4" thick rotationally moulded.

Ardemco have a website at:

you can buy ABS food grade (white) for your fresh water tanks (about $90 per 4' x 8' x 1/4" sheet) and non-food grade (black) for waste tanks ($80 per sheet). ABS is used extensively for food and works very well for water tanks. In my case, the day before I left to pick up the ABS I found 2 115 gal SST tanks that would fit. Joe 4106

The best prices for tanks I have found is Ameri-Kart in Bristol Indiana. You have to call for prices and have a size you want-- 800 232-0847. They may even have blems.

I bought fresh water tanks at RV Surplus in ELkhart, IN. There were various sizes and shapes, priced at approximately $1.00 per gallon capicity of the tanks.

Epoxy is more waterproof than polyester resin that they will spray for you. You could give a tank a final several coats of epoxy over the other resin. It will stick. You could do it your self. I finish the horizontal surface and let cure and turn the box so a new surface is horizontal. Takes five days. You can use a window sqeegee to distribute the resin. Wax the blade so it will release any resin left on it. One source of epoxy resins is RAKA in Florida. www.raka.com

HI, ALL:
HAS ANYONE TRIED the spray in bed linner material? Our local shop say's that it is aproved for food and water usage. But I don't know for sure. Does anyone know if this is so. It sure would be easy to make your tanks. Just box them up and go by and have them spray the inside and cap a lid on. Ernie

While Ardemco is a good supporter of the boards and of MAK, Ardemco and several others buy their tanks from Ronco Plastics in Tustin, Ca. Ronco will sell you the tanks for about 30% less than anyone else downstream that also sells the tanks. Same tanks, same model numbers, same sizes, thicknesses etc.
