I normally put my chalks behind the wheels but yesterday in a hurry didn't after parking our 4106 in front of the house on a 5% grade (will always use in the future). 3 hours later found the tail end of the bus half way out in the street and the front turned wheels had climbed the fence and bank enough to stop her (thank God). Had to climb in thru a window and start'r up. The park break was still on but I can't figure what would cause this. My compressor is passing oil and is to be replaced in 2 weeks along with total break/air system check. Is it safe to drive on a short trip before servicing? Have MiniMax break cans. Thanks, Joe |

Joe About the only way I can see is the rear brakes are so far out of adjustment that the shoes are not pressing on the drum hard enough. You can always back up easier then forward with the brakes on. It could be the system is full of oil but the parking system should have worked. I personally wouldn't drive the coach till I found out for sure what the problem is. Your system could be so full of oil that the brakes just won't come on when you need them. Bill |

that is strange !!...usually no air...means you aren't going anywhere...guess I will have to agree...shoes must not be touching, YOU DEFINITELY need to learn how to adjust your slack adjusters.. |

...and now you see why ALL truckers who carry dangerous stuff use wheel chocks as routine! Isn't it funny that the first time you decide "it's ok" is usually when the universe will decide to hand you a lesson! Thankfully an easy one. Mine was in '66 when I was in a hurry to get ready for a date. I pulled my '57 chevy in and parked it on the wrong side of the street (about a 3% grade), in a hurry I set the parking brake and ran into the house to get a quick shower. Didn't turn the wheels into the curb and didn't park in my driveway as I usually do... ...came out to find what was left of my car sitting 6 feet inside my "down-the-hill" neighbor's living room. Ugh. What a mess. And, no date that night! The only time anything like that ever happened, probably because I was in a hurry Gary |

Mini-Maxi's have a long history of this and that explains why they quit making them. Not necessarily anything to do with oil in the system or out of adjustment shoes. The design of the pod allowed them to release; all it takes is a small loss of pressure from the activating pressure. |

Are you sure we are not confusing this brake control with the old ICC control that we all had and disconnected, because when the air leaks down on the ICC the breaks reiease?? John |

i thought that when i had a loss of air pressure (to 60 psi or less) then they would lock-up. in fact i'm sure of it. and when i apply the park break, aren't i removing air pressure to the cans which allows the break springs to engage the breaks? thanks to all. joe |

I only know about the original ICC break that my 4104 came with the breaks are on and set as long as you have air. No air they are off. I disconected the ICC control because you can set it one night and in the morning wake up and the bus has rolled off down the road. Spring breaks, which I added, ONLY realse when air is applied at 60 psi or more. Below this they are ON. No air you cannot move, unless you get underneath and back the screw/bolt off to back the spring off. Joe I would think you may have the old ICC system, John |

i don't have the old ICC system; when i loose air pressure 60 psi or less the breaks come ON. but i think i may have an idea as to what my prob is. i think one of the springs is broken. i believe i can drive it safely but can not rely on the parking break. what do you think? |

I don't see any reason to rip on TWO DOGS there... He's got it right, brakes.. All very important components.. What if you're driving along and lose all air pressure because of a line rupture or something? How are you going to stop on that seemingly small 6% grade, when your parking brake cannot hold the coach on a driveway? Get it working first, I'd say. I'm sure Buswarrior could add to what I've said. |

o.k. back in the 70's....I worked for a company that manufactured grain trailers....I was the painter....(but) one day the boss called a meeting...& told everybody that they had a month to get rid of this one brakeing system& we needed to get rid of the ones in the warehouse that had the brakes that you guys are talking about....BECAUSE they were no longer going to be able to sell them...because Gov. said they were inferior....guess what...bet that system is what is on that particular bus...sorry about the spelling lesson...it was like fingernails on a chalkboard |

Spring brakes are often called maxi brakes. Big spring held in compressed state by air pressure greater than 30PSI. (Not 60 PSI, below 60 PSI is when your alarm buzzer is supposed to sound.) Springs are the best, in my not so humble opinion. They are not perfect (don't throw away your wheel chocks, you'll still need them) but when working right, when they are on they are ON. Some older brake systems relied on air pressure for the parking brake. No air pressure, no parking brake and the coach rolls away. Some trucks and coaches have a cable or linkage operated driveline brake on the tail of the transmission for the parking brake. On an incline, park one wheel on dry concrete or asphalt, and the other on a slippery surface and your bus will do the moonwalk down the hill when viewed from the slippery side. Why do people call them breaks when they are brakes? I think this is what Two Dogs was trying to point out. If you think he was being petty, then take some time out to learn to spell properly. It makes you look like an idiot otherwise. |

TD is right on here. He is referring to the Mini-Maxi setups; and they were taken off the market as unsafe as they would release with a small air loss from application pressure. They were quite different than DD3's (Maxi's) in design and operation, and both Mini-Maxi and Maxi's are different than Spring brakes in design and method of operation. |

This should probalby be in it's own thread, but we'll have some fun with it for a few minutes anyway. . . "Why do people call them breaks when they are brakes? I think this is what Two Dogs was trying to point out." Ah, the joys of the English language!! It's not only spelling that trips us up, it's also syntax - the correct spelling, but misapplication. For example: He took a break while working on his brakes. . . They're going over there to pick up their bus. . . I'm going to pick-up two six-packs, too! The whole building collapsed into that hole. . . Anybody else have some? Playfully, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA PS: Syntax is not what they charge you for visiting a brothel in NV!! LOL. . . |

Seems like we're all languishing in misspellings. One clarification, DD3's aren't Maxi's. Maxi's have springs to apply the parking brake without air. DD3's use air to apply the parking brake and an internal lock keeps them on. Jim |

I’m the one who started this and when one of us posted “learn to spell properly” and “you look like an idiot” I needed to take a break. I’m glad I did. But I guess I’m less of an idiot now that I know how to spell it but I still smell as sweet (Shakespeare) and I still can’t spell. If my spelling causes heartburn then please pass over my posts. Anyhow, the brakes on my bus are Mini-Max made by International Transquip out of Houston TX. If I remember correctly, George Lowry told me that they had a good product but went out of biz cause of poor management. My original question was “My compressor is passing oil and is to be replaced in 2 weeks along with total break(brake)/air system check. Is it safe to drive on a short trip before servicing?” I think it’s safe to drive but thought I’d check and see what you all thought. YHS, joe |

Joe - Humorous malaprops with the English language aside, back to your original question: Is it safe to drive on a short trip before servicing? I'll answer that with a "that depends". Have you done a pre-trip inspection brake check on the system recently? By doing one, it will help you determine the answer to your question. If it passes the brake check, then enjoy your trip. If it doesn't pass the brake check, then you need to get the system serviced, which I understand you already have scheduled. There is a pre-trip inspection located in the Articles of Interest section of BNO, off the main index page, and it includes a complete brake check. After reading thru it, if you have any questions, drop me a note privately (r4106 at comcast dot net) and I'll help walk you thru it. HTH, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

The old ICC brakes were fore EMERGENCY STOPS, not poo boy parking brakes. What happened to the good old Johnson Bar that most GM came with? They will hold on a 15% grade , air or not , and don't "pop off". AS well as holding back in a really steep hill, to keep from rolling backward as the clutch is eased in. Johnson Bar = no suprises , Works for me, FAST FRED |

One problem I see is that people wander into these groups, want answers from total strangers, in fact, sometimes demand answers and then complain when they don't get the answer they wanted. They don't seem to appreciate that all of the people who give out the info and advice don't get paid and do it as a favor and definately not for abuse. Some questions are so basic that a search on Google will produce the answer, so they are either too lazy or won't try to learn about the internet. Nearly all of us are self taught in that field. What's so hard than to type a few words into a search engine? Many lurkers, fewer contributors. We are loosing more and more of the experts due to the abuse that these kind people are being subjected to, when all they try to do is help. Sure there is a little funnin' and some ribbin' too, but that is often between the regulars. Peter. |

If the brakes are not spring brakes then they have a mechanism to hold the brakes on once the parking brakes are applied using reserve air pressure. It takes airpressure to overcome this mechainical lock and release the brakes. If the brakes release when the air pressure drops, this mechanical lock is not working and the brake cannisters need rebuilding with attention to cleaning and repairing this mecnainism. It is not safe to drive, because there is no air to reapply the brakes until the engine runs a few minutes. Imagine jumping in that bus as it started to roll backwards and finding no brakes at all. Chocks are a great idea but the cans need repair. |
