Bus won't stop so man bails out of back of bus onto freeway

Associated Press

VENTURA, Calif. - A Greyhound bus passenger who wanted off of a Los Angeles-bound express removed an emergency window and leaped onto Highway 101, landing in the freeway's fast lane with only a few scrapes and cuts.

The southbound bus was traveling at 55 mph when Fidel Cueva, 41, of Ventura jumped near the Santa Clara River Bridge at 5:27 p.m. Monday. Cueva hit the freeway, rolled and came to rest in the fast lane.

"Several vehicles were able to avoid hitting him," said Officer Steve Reid of the California Highway Patrol. Cueva was treated at Ventura County Medical Center for cuts and scrapes.

"For whatever reason, this gentleman wanted to get off the bus at Ventura. So he chose to jump out the window," Reid said.

Cueva boarded the Greyhound bus in Santa Maria and told driver Alvaro Zeledon that he wanted to be dropped off at the depot in Ventura, authorities said. Zeledon refused, explaining the bus was a nonstop express between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.

"We do stop in Ventura on other schedules, but not this one," Greyhound spokeswoman Kim Plaskett said.

Cueva became upset, moved to the back of the bus, removed the emergency window and jumped out, Reid said. The bus was carrying 19 other passengers.

In a pervious life, I worked for a company that took all of Greyhounds insurance calls. We would take the call from the driver and send out the adjuster.

I have stories of people jumping out of windows, loosing things to the world of blue stinky water, and snakes on the bus. Best one was a person who wanted off the bus right now. The driver said no. The person started to cut the neck of the driver with a knife. The driver slammed on the brakes. The person with the knife went forward into the windsheild and knocked himself out. The driver stopped the bus and rolled the guy out the door and drove off. Driver just had a minor cut on his neck.

TWO DOGS, I read many of your posts. You say you went to a HELL'S ANGELS 50th party in '97? Well that explains alot. Now I understand where you're coming from & I can only guess where you're headed. Later

I'll bet ol' Two Dogs has lots of background and stories that we probably shouldn't know. ;)

Not to mention law enforcement!

Reminds me of Oktoberfest, last train leaving Munich, when we decided we need some beer for the trip home. I ran to the kiosk, bought the beer, but the train was rolling by the time I got back to the platform. No big deal, threw the bier thru the open window to my friends and then jumped thru. Landed in the aisle next to Brunhilde the ticket inspektor who was definitely not pleased with me. Sure beat spending the night in Munich Hauptbanhof, though.
