My wife and I (mid-30s) have been tossing around the idea of purchasing a bus and going out on the road with our four children (all under 11). This sounds crazy to me as I write it (and when we talk about it), but I really can't think of a valid reason not to do it. They are homeschooled, so wherever we are, there's the school. I am a writer, so as long as I have a computer and a modem, I can get freelance writing assignments to earn income. We live in Texas and her family lives in New England. This would allow us the opportunity to visit them on a more regular basis, without having to endure those extreme winters. Besides, I could go to Spring Training in Florida every year, if I want to. It seems an invention of the 20th-century mind that "requires" we settle down in one location for our lifetimes. Pioneers and revolutionaries didn't sit around waiting for their circumstances to change before they acted. They acted out of passion, not retirement boredom. If there are any young families experiencing this journey, I would love to hear about it. Also, I'm soliciting advice from others who have been on the road for a while. Thanks |

Mel, Go to Escapees.com or call (888)757-2582. Great non-profit RV club, about 6500 members, half are full timers, many with children. Their mail forwarding dept is so large it has it's own zip code! Incidentally, their home base is Livingston, TX, just North of Houston! They know all about legal domicile, mail forwarding, voting rights, state income taxes, vehicle license fees, and all the other problems a full timer has. Dues are $50 a year and they even have "Care", a place to take care of you when you can no longer travel. Great group. good luck. Jim Stacy |

Mel, We are in the same boat; almost that is cause we just bought our first bus. We have 2 little girls, both will be home schooled (bus schooled), we are in sw Missouri and are traveling to new england to look for a new home. I too am a writer (but don't get paid for it). I think it's a great idea and am working to get the bus ready for our first trip at the end of september. Joe |

Mel: I read an article in Bus Conversions magazine about The Huskey family (of 5 + dog) who traveled (or are traveling) all 50 states (excl. Hawaii) in a 45-foot Prevost. You might want to refer to back issues for their story. Sounds like a great idea, assuming you've got the right configured coach. 3 kids and a dog for a loooooong period of time? Geez, I don't know??? |
