I already posted this on Diesel Chat, but got no response, so I thought I'd try here. I'm new here and I have a question for the experts. Has anybody seen the new TV commercial for Six Flags? You can view it at; mms://streams.sixflags.com/SFMR6PDA There is another frontal view of the bus on their home page at; www.sixflags.com I'm having a good spirited discussion (argument) with a friend of mine about the bus that is used in the commercial. I say that it is a 1950's era GMC PD4103 and he insists that it is a Flxible, but doesn't know what model or year. I'm hoping that somebody on here can shed some light on this, after they wake up later and reads this, as it is driving me nuts....er....BUS NUTS!! Thanks, John |

I realy like the music to that commercial. They are using the first campaign that hits the entire nation, screaming "ITS TIME TO PLAY". LOL I have not been able to see any tags on that bus, some of the bus shots are computer animated, some are not. I don't know for sure but I was leaning toward the Flexible. "Imagine" cd |

It's a GMC PD-4103. The giveaway is the in the open front door, the first window behind the door, and the rear end shot. If it was a Flx, it would be a Clipper, and would have three front bumpers on it, plus the distinctive rounded back end. I wonder who the ad agency was that created the commercial. . . Yup! It's a GMC 4103, allright! This will provide future reference to win that bet: http://www.coachinfo.com/ just click on the "all about buses" tab and slide down to the GMC button. |

Why are you so sure it is not a 4102? |

The 4102 has arrow style indicators; the 4103 has round ones. The bus in http://www.sixflags.com/ has rounded ones. Where's my money? |

Well shucks, you win. I am old and can't see those fine details clearly! (A lame excuse is better than none at all I assume.) |

This is indeed a PD4103 and has been used in a number of TV commercials and shows over the years. The red and cream paint scheme appears to be a copy of the 1940s-50s era Surface Transportation System of New York City as used on their TD4506s and TDH4507s |

RJ, the Doner Agency of Southfield, Michigan did the spot. They have an office in Arlington, TX, which is the home of the original Six Flags over Texas. http://www.adforum.com/adfolio/reel_detail.asp?ID=37074&TDI=VDcyZPtH&PAGE=1&bShop=True&awid= http://www.sixflags.com/press/adlaunch.asp And if you just have to hear the music again, http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/recs/radio/krex/-/track/B00000IOP4001001/103-3750921-6279051 OK, enough trivia for me today. Back to sweat and bus-reality. |

The Campaign is running localized versions of the commercials with little shots of the local parks. I caught a version of the Midwest Great America (gurnee Il) the other night, a 60sec shot. This company sure has an imagination and the combination of the bus, the old fellow (busnut?) and the music makes the commercial a hit. I was reading a forum that was in a heated debate with split decisions on whether the commercial was good or bad. The bad side of course stating that it would not achieve what the ad company wants, which would be attention. I think the arguement itself prooves the commercial has certainly surrpassed its goal. The results are in. After many calls to different Six Flags Offices, I received an email from Six Flags Marketing reading, "The title we have for the bus says its a 1951- GMC - Model: FJ" Now what is a FJ model. John |

RJ, I got this info from the "Information services for intercity and transit buses", under "All About Buses" and then "GMC" at; http://www.coachinfo.com/AllAboutBuses/GMC_Info.html ......................................................... 4103 SPECIFICATIONS Length: 35 feet Width: 96 inches Wheelbase: 247 inches Typical Engine: DDA 6-71 Seating 37, 41 Production history Year Quantity 1951-1953 1,501 GM created the model PD-4102 by restyling its 41-passenger bus in 1950 using a distinctive new front end with the destination sign below the windshield but retaining the rear end of the PDA-4101. Only 116 were built. In 1951 GM finished the restyling by updating the rear end and changing the model number to PD-4103. Production of this bus totaled 1,501 with Greyhound buying a substantial quantity. Many also operated for Trailways and other operators. Information from the Bus World Encyclopedia of Buses - 1988 .......................................................... I personally think that it is a PD4103 and I come to that conclusion, from the video and the statement above about "updating the rear end". I have actually been able to enlarge and freeze the video, at different points to get a better look at different parts of the bus and it does have the "updated rear end", being somewhat flat with rounded corners, as compared to the earlier versions that had the rounded rear end and plus the fact that the change came about in 1951 and we know from what their title says, that is the year of the bus. This may help in deciding which model of GMC bus that it is, but I have won the bet, by the fact that the discussion / argument was between it being a GMC PD4103 and a Flxible and we now know that it..... "AIN'T NO FLXIBLE" John |

There was no explanation of what they meant by updated rear end, but I took it to mean the relatively flat back rear end compared to the older rounded Flxible style rear end. John |
