Can someone help with the identification of a 6V92TA that has the following numbers:
6VF072204
8067-3421

and has injectors 9S70 installed.

With any luck I will begin installing this engine in my 4104 in the next few weeks.

Thanks in advance

Juan -

Are you SURE that this is a LH engine? Did you get it out of a truck?

If it's a RH engine, you're going to end up w/ four speeds in reverse and one speed forward!

Perhaps Geoff can jump in here and ID the engine for you, but just be aware of what I pointed out.

It is a 45° LH rotation engine

Just came back from a trip from Baja California and pulling long hills at 15 to 20 mph in first gear was not a lot of fun. Love the Bus, but engine and brakes got to be upgraded

I think the s70 injectors put it in the 270-275hp category. They went down to 235 with 60 injectors. Appears that perhaps it is a CAL transit engine, rebuilt and upgraded on injectors.

Juan -

OK, so you've got the right rotation. . . BUT:

Are you bolting this up to the original gearbox, or swapping the manual out for an automatic?

Are you providing additional cooling capacity?

Just a few more questions to help us help you. . .

left hand rotation has the number on the left side of block when looking from the rear. Right hand on the right side again from rear view

Juan, I have a complete service manual for a series 92 Detroit Diesel and according to the numbers you stated the book shows this.
8067
8- Designates a series 92 V engine
06- Designates the no of cyl.
7- Designates type of application.
2- marine
3- industrial
5- generator
7- vehicle
8- vehicle

The next set of numbers 3421.
Basic engine arrangement and drive shaft rotation.

3- Designates left hand rotation. (7 would
designate right hand rotation.)
4- Designates aftercooled engine.
0- Designate a 4 valve head.
3- Turbocharged.
4- Aftercooled.
5- Customer special engine.
7- Constant HP (TT)
8- Constant HP (TTA) Calif. and Fed.
A- DDEC I (TA)
B- DDEC II (TA)

21- Designates specific model no.

This chart will probably not turn out right because the "add a message box" is smaller than the post area.

Juan, a little more info.
9S70 injectors produce 260 HP @2100 RPM, 872 Ft Lb of torque at 1000 RPM.
This book shows:
9G85 300 HP @ 1800 RPM, 975 torque @ 1200 RPM
9G90 350 HP @ 2100 RPM, 1020 torque @ 1200 RPM.

This book was published for 1988 and older engines. (74-88)
Newer info probably is available. Check with one of the DD gurus.
I stated some info out of this book once, and was promptly told it was wrong.
Later, Ed.

Thank you guys for the info.

The engine did come out of a California bus and it's suppossed to have about 60K miles on it. My bus already has the V730 trannie with retarder and the good third member in the axle. The screaming jimmy (671) makes the bus run at 70 mph on the flats turning about 2100 rpms
I pulled a valve cover yesterday and the 6V has two valve heads. I would like to set this engine up to about 1000ft-lb torque.

I also bought a spare 4104 cradle, the big RTS radiator and a short catalitic muffler that I probably won't be using

Thanks all

Thank you bowlingshoegiverouter

Don't know what I'll do with the 671. It has 17K miles since major o'haul and Jakes. A mechanic and I are negociating him doing the work in exchange for the motor. I have not made up my mind yet.

RJ,

I bought this bus from a fellow in Santa Barbara,
He apparently bought it at a Church auction and the story he told me was that the fellow that converted it finished it and passed away. The wife then donated the bus to a church.

does the cat have a name on it . Johnson matthey, englehart,Donaldson or some other. You need to check the liner ports they may be .850 if so don,t go over an 80 injector. If it has .950 liner ports you can run what you like provided the turbo is big enough. Throw the throttle delay away and install a fuel modulator. If it came out of a transit and has a cat it probably has C.C.T.S camshafts in it, there are about 7,000 of those engines out there running around.

Thanks Don,
I will take a look at the cat. I don't want to use it. I would like to use a truck-style muffler with 5 or 6 inch diameter pipe.
What is the easiest way to determine the liner port size? Removing the Supercharger?

Thanks again,

Juan

Juan,

you don,t have to use the cat. it will run better with out it. pull the air box cover off of the side of the engine and use a small caliper. or have your mechanic do it. don't pull the turbo or blower.

I am almost positive that this is the bus from Fresno that was parked about 2 block SW of Shaw and Blackstone. Coach Services in Paso Robles did some cosmetic work on it. Gary could tell you the original owner/converers name as I have forgotten it. I think Nemco put in the V730. The Fresno owner lost his drivers license about 4 years ago. If it is the bus that I think it is I would suggest you consider reinforceing the motor mount area by the bellhousing as they cut a lot of metal out of this area. They did not add much back in it's place.
Very nice bus, I have seen it a dozen plus times.

Update,

Took off the air box cover and measured the port size. They measure .953". Also shining a light into the cylinder, I was able to see the cross hatch on the cyl wall. it looks very nice and clean
