Hey I have a 12kw Onan genset and was wondering about something> It was out of a marine application,Perkins diesel engine. Now?? When you fire er up, it will smoke like a freight train climbing a hill and after you let it warm up some and put a load on it the smoke clears up. I was told that a Perkins engine always done that even from Onan themselves. Is this true? It uses about a gallon an hour of fuel and is that normal. The smoke smells like fuel and is a whiteish color but again it quits when under load. It is 1800 rpm and 110v on each leg. A good note there are no bugs around here LOL

Ours in the 4104 would do a little when first started in colder temps; otherwise just 3 to 5 seconds worth at startup. They don't have glowplugs like the newer ones. You could add a block heater or intake heater to help. The injector timing is probably fixed for the normal run rpm. How many hours? If engine is getting tired, it will smoke more till up to temperature. You could try to run it on Kerosine and see if that helps any. Or one of the Cetane improvers. We had a Koehler with that engine. We did replace the mechanical fuel pump with an electric one when it started to leak out the weep hole. They use an odd expensive thermostat with bellows. It went bad and after trying to find on, even reasonable, found a regular automotive one the same diameter and installed it. Worked fine and started to run at normal temp. I suspect it was running on the cold side for some time, as it didn't have a temp gauge.

Chessie I have no problem with running temp, I have it about 180 and I am suspecting that the injectors need some attention. The engine was gone thru completly and I am at a loss for the fuel pressure that maybe the problem too. I put fresh off-road desiel in it and I think that made it worse LOL I ran it for about 2 hour and not much of a change today.

You could pull the injectors and have them checked.Make sure the return line has no blockage. The manual also has procedures to check pump timing.
