Moving right along...
I want to replace the drivers seat in our 102. I have a fair idea what I want but am not sure as to where to get it.
I want a seat that will not take up the whole space where the seat is now, Has arm rests, fabric covered i.e. not leather. Adjustable for other drivers (as if that is going to happen)
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Les

Les, check out salvage yards for full sized conversion vans,, not the front seats cause they only move forward and back but the center seats, they not only slide but swivel too and most had less useage than the front seats, I bought a great set for my revcon for almost nothing and they were flexsteel seats with all the options, heat, recline, swivel and also have both armrests, often the front seats only have the center armrest, I think I paid about 50 bucks for mine total and got the seat pedistals with the seat belts attached, just a thought, mine came out of a ford conversion van. One drawback is you probably won't find an air ride seat in a conversion van, for that probably a salvage yard that deals in semi's or other commercial trucks might be a good place to check, I couldn't afford the new option so I found mine and they were within the idea of affordable for me.

Les

Have a look at the seat that Prevost uses in their XL. Some conversion companies use those but usually leather clothed. Check with Rick in Winterburn, he might have some. Time for coffee next week? Yeah I know its way past midnite but still adjusting from jetlag.

While some of the custom seating in fancy van conversions look nice (and some are actually good), I would suggest looking for a truck driver's seat. They are made for hours of comfortable seating and usually have lumbar adjustments, adjustable backs, tiltable seats. The new standard seats in the Freightliner Cascadias are nice and comfy-course I'm a bit wider then most. If you find a seat on a new truck you like, just get the last six digits of the trucks serial number and you can have that exact seat. Good Luck, TomC

I agree tom, my drivers seat in my iggle is an air ride truck seat and it's great, but the seat I got for my revcon is equally as comfortable and well made, I do wish the revcon seat had the air ride option tho so I could adjust the height of it, however, I wish the air ride seat in the bus had a taller back, it has a head rest that is just above neck high and the revcon seat back comes up to the top of my head and is very comfortable, I'll often pull into a rest stop and recline the seat and catch an hour or so when I'm in a driving mood and want to stay on the road, so each has good points and points I wish were better, one good point is the seat I got out of the van was 1000 dollars cheaper and like new, what it all means is to look at all of them and pick the one that fits a persons backside best, the surplus places had some great seats too but they seemed to all be white leather and started at 400 or so. One nice thing is I got a matching copilots seat thrown in for the 50 bucks and it was like new too and a matching electric couch that folds out into a bed from the back of the van for another 25 bucks, course I had to unbolt them myself but for a total of 75 bucks I got some great stuff and some other goodies like an LED ceiling panel 10 ft long with oak trim and accent lighting and a black insert that makes the LED's look like a starry night.

In the revcon the seats being able to swivel is nice because they then can be used as living room seating, the iggle seat doesn't swivel and as I get more crippled up it would be nice if it did cause I could get into it easier.

The trick in going to the wrecking yard for a driver's seat...

Look closely at the PASSENGER seat.

It may be the same seat as the driver's, only with little to no wear or use.

Yes, many passenger seats in trucks are not equal seats to the driver's but if it is....

happy coaching!

I think that I will be going with a truck type seat. They do seem to have the features that I want. I found some at a truck wrecker but didn't find what I want yet.
I may take the path of buying a new seat but the cost is high, I was quoted between $800 and $1500
Sounds like a lot of money but then I hope to have my soft little touchie planted in it a lot.
Thanks for the input... the search continues

Joe

You got me thinking about the passenger seat in one of our feed trucks back in the 70's. 100 lb burlap bag of bran. You had to take it out to fluff it up once in a while, but it was less than 5 bucks. No stinkin seatbelt to mess with either...

Haha i remember using 2 large cinder blocks with a boat cushion with the upgrade to the flexible milk crate base. We got a drivers seat with the highback that has alot of the good features. Remember if there is wear on the drivers side edge you wont see it on a coach unless you have built a drivers door.

We followed the advice of Fred Hobe (see Archives)....sought out a Chrysler New Yorker....1980's,90's (memory serves me???); could have been later.

Leather, 6 way, lotsa' comfort and BOY>>>>have we been tickled. Got both Driver and Passenger, with seat belts---less than 100 bucks for both, if I remember correctly; 'course, that was a "few years" back, but most probably still low $$. :-)

I know, Les...not leather...but, one could do some fancy seat covers and still not have a big investment...or?

I had not thought of one of the big boats of yesteryear as a possible donor for seats. You are right, some of those were great but might be lacking arm rests.
Did you have any luck with the bolt holes matching with the chrysler seats?

Les National were the originals in a lot of coaches and are still made. We have a high-back air ride with lumbar support and thigh bolster. I found swivels for it and it bolted through the floor holes that were there in our 5C.It is herculon material Black and just brushes clean and tough but soft on the back side. Wreaking yard 50.00. Sears also has similar in truck seats, or Bostrum air rides are great seats.

Les...no to the match up of holes...

...we "fashioned" our own seat supports so had no problem with bolting ....and we do have arm rests, albeit only on one side. Actually reversed the passenger/driver sides; arm rests were then on the "aisle". Made structures for the other side.

Jamo,

After surviving a light plane crash and an auto crash, both totaled, while wearing seat belts I no longer consider them as "No stinkin seatbelt to mess with either..."!!

I had the air pedistal and instaled a middle row leather seat from a 2002 KIA Sedona, has 2
hinged arm rests. Do like the seat. Only thing I did not get the seat to the rite quite far enough.
Good luck Larry

Just clowning Gus. My Dad made me put seatbelts in my '55 Ford Customline when I got it in 1970 (when I turned 16). I've been wearing them ever since...and I make others wear them who are with me.

Back when I was flying, the Cherokee 140 had a nice harness, but I always thought about the "be sure to unlatch & pop the door open before a forced landing" so you didn't get trapped. Thankfully, I never had to...

I would very much like that seat Fred but it might not fit this years budget.
the style of the seat is about what I have in mind. I don't think I will put enough hours in it to justify the cost for the extra technology.
I have a budget of about $1000 for the seat
Thanks

Wow fred, that sounds like the perfect seat but also sounds like a major investment, my problem is that I'm getting so crippled up now that I have to stop every couple hundred miles and walk around or lay down so I use that break to top off the tanks, get a lunch or just unlimber a little, I've also looked at the new yorker seats and they are great, also the seats from the old Imperials were great, I think the new generation of cadillac seats will also be very comfortable, I had a olds 98, touring sedan that had some great seats with major adjustment ability, they even had electric headrests that moved all over the place.

$6000??? Fred, post some pictures of your Bose seat.I wonder if it would be $2000 without the Bose name? Definitely nice though. How about a Cadillac Escalade or GMC Denali seat on an air ride platform?

That Bose seat is simply amazing.

Get to a venue where it is being displayed and try it out.

The Bose people have used all their wizardry, nay, I say, black arts...

You simply are isolated from every vibration, far beyond what one might imagine, until you sit in one.

After that, you will doubt what it is you believed before.

Not that I have the cash to spend, but if you spec it in a new vehicle, it just fades into the option list and the accountant depreciates it along with the rest.

Similarly, have you tried their sound cancelling headphones...?

happy coaching!

My good friend who owns the largest paint & body shop in town took me to his favorite wrecking yard. At his suggestion, I got a driver's seat from a 2008 Chevy Suburban. It has built-in seat and shoulder belts and is fully electric. I appreciate that it has adjustable lumbar support, since I had a lower back surgery some years ago. It set me back less than U. S. $80. I also had the choice of a leather one at twice the cost. But also chose cloth because I always sweat like a horse.
Our new driver's seat, from 2008 Suburban.

I have owned 3 suburbans and have ridden in several others. They do have good seats!
I see that the one you have does not have arm rests. Makes it very similar to the seat that MCI put in my coach.
Because of a bum shoulder I need arm rests.
I haven't found the seat of my dreams yet and appreciate the input
