Doug I have the 2kw unit and it seems to be okay. I've had it for about 5 years without problems. It is only used to power small things on a dry weekend as it is limited on power. I was told it was the exact same as the Honda unit but had a brass jet in the carb where Honda uses a plastic one. Bill | ||

I have a honda 3000Is and the kipor 3000, they look the same but internally are very much different, I had the kipor in the shop a couple of times and the wait for parts was about 6 weeks where the honda was in the shop once and home the same day, Hilltop RV is the kipor dealer in this area and has several of them right now in the shop waiting on parts, not sure if that is an indicator but didn't scare me at all, my kipor works well and I'm told that parts availability is getting better, it is fairly quiet but not even close to being as quiet as my honda but my honda cost twice as much too. For the money I thought it was a good deal and still think so, my only wish is that it could be coupled with the honda to make 6K, you can couple 2 hondas if they are the same wattage, another thing I wish is that a remote starter was available, the honda has one available but I haven't installed it yet, I looked to see if the kipor would accept one like the honda and it is a different setup. | ||

Doug, It seems like you have been chasing a gen for a while. Have you looked into a good used takeout either from a RV salvage or other? The powertech on my coach was a takeout from a bloodmobile replaced after 5000 hours. | ||

Try searching light generators, like the ones they use on construction sites along the highway, I have seen lots of them for sale over the years, they all seem to have kubota engines and are designed to run continuously, and are fairly cheap, good luck Bill | ||

Hey thanks guys, and yes Tim I really want one bad to run the AC's while underway but try to explain to the bank(wife) why need to spend 6k for a good gen set. I look at ebay all the time so I think a used 5-7kw is what I'm looking for | ||

We've been through this MANY times before, you can't use a construction type generator in the bay of an RV! Air cooled RV generators are built so that their hot air is discharged thru a duct towards the ground, instead of being blown out the sides of the gen. An RV gen pulls cool air across the engine, and exhausts the hot air downward, which takes a lot of additional sheetmetal, compared to a temporary or construction type gen which takes cool air in the end and just blows it across the fins and out into the compartment. A set of louvers in the compartment door are also required to let in the cool air for combustion and cooling, which keeps the compartment cool. I bought some light towers from RSC 2 years ago as Bill mention most were 3.5 kw it just took a HP change on the Kubota or Cat engine to make a 6kw generator I paid less than a 1000 bucks a piece,1 had less than a 100 hrs that was wrecked. Check your rental stores goodluck | ||

The problems to overcome with a construction type of generator is channeling the exhaust to the outside safely, that involves come creative pipeing and cooling the unit, they tend to be louder than a dedicated rv generator too. I've seen them with custom exhausts that incorporated a muffler that made the exhaust quiet but that still left a lot of armature noise to deal with so a quiet box would be in order if a person can keep it running cool enough, there are a lot of locations that seem to work well as far a locating the generator, I find that the old a/c compartment back by the engine is a prime spot, not only for the generator but also for a tool box and mine has an expanded metal front that helps with cooling, I also use a fan thats plugged into the genenerator that comes on when the generator is running to expell heated air from the compartment, they generally arn't recommended for rv use but I do know of several in use in rv's but all had modifications to them so the exhaust was piped outside and away from the bus and had extra cooling and sound reduction taken into concideration. The question here involves kipor generators, I've had some experiences with mine and I feel that for a relatively low cost generator they will do the job just fine, my problems involved parts availability and they seem to be working on that, the ideal generator, I guess, would be the diesel generator, plumbed into the main tank and of a size that will run whatever you want, the reality is many of us don't have the 10K extra laying around and want to take a look at a lower cost option and there are many out there, another option is an APU unit from a truck salvage yard, there are lots of options, just pick one and then deal with it in a safe manner. | ||

We have a RV dealer here that sells the Kipor parts don't seem to be a problem for him.I just offered him a option Cody a 20,000 hr unit vs a 2000 hr for less money | ||

Clifford, up here parts for anything can be a challenge, it has been a couple of years since I had my kipor worked on and parts may no longer be in short supply in this area, I have given a lot of thought to a diesel generator from time to time but it appears the ones I have will outlast me now. Clifford, you seem to be moving a lot of stuff out the door, just cleaning the shop? I'm getting so crippled up now that it's getting difficult to move around the house much less the bus, so I've been unloading, tossing and generally downsizing. Tired of working on buses Cody lol get all the tools gone and it won't be a problem. Wish I was closer to you I have some nice work working stuff to rid myself of. I have a Dewalt 9 in radial arm saw made in the 50's I need to find a good free home for it was my Granddads and I want to give to somebody that would use it and keep it and not sale it for 50 bucks lol. I ran a free ad the 1st guy that wanted the saw made the mistake of saying to his buddy we can 50 to 100 bucks for that I still have the saw in the shop good luck | ||

I wish I lived closer too, the warmer weather would be nice, I still do a lot of sawdust piling but I work a lot slower now, I've got a lot of stuff from the 50's and earlier, seems they knew how to make tools back then, my old olivers still have the oil cups that you have to keep full but they were designed to run forever. |
