I’ve been actively checking out MC5A coaches to replace our wrecked MC5A. One ad I read stated it has an air assisted clutch. Another MC5A I personally checked out had a lever ridding against the movement of the clutch mechanism below the driver area which in turn appeared to operate a micro switch. This coach had a very easily operated clutch which when fully depressed was easily held to the floor. It did operate more stiffly before the air pressure was up to operating range.

My question is, Could it be that this micro switch controls the air assist clutch? And, What does the air assist system actually do? How does it work? And finally, supposing I buy a MC5A that does not already have such an assist, how does one go about purchasing and installing such a feature?

I know on the GM’s there is often talk of the Mousetrap, but I’ve not before known of an assist available for the earier MCI’s.

Thanks,

Tim.

The air assist cylinder keeps air pressure to the clutch mechanism and requires no periodic maintenance. The clutch air cylinder is MCI p/n 5B-5-45,This is the same cylinder that is used on the A/C compressor belt tightener.
I'll send you by e mail a copy of the clutch operating mechanism and a description of the clutch air assist from the MCI manual.
Hope this will help.

We have an air assisted clutch on our GM 4104. It reduces the clutch pedal effort from 75 Lbs to 18 lbs! It uses a 3" cylinder mounted at the clutch lever and a mechanical actuating valve installed in the clutch arm pull rod at the rear. The valve opens when the rod pulls as you step on the clutch. It dumps as you let up on the pedal. It does not use electric solenoids.

It has proven trouble free & I recommend such a system.

G.E.Brenner, I too have a MC5A and the clutch is hard on my knee. Please email me a copy of the clutch operating mechanism and a description of the clutch air assist from the MCI manual. Thanks, Bill
