Ok. I checked the archives, didn't locate anything, and now feel safe asking: On a 1979 MC9, is there a way to fix the door to make it easy to open without the use of that inside handle or outside button? For a seasoned bus driver it's a nuisance, but to a wife with arthritis, it could be a living hell. |

Yes, Remove the dash handle assembly and install a truck type handle assembly in the door with the "nader" pin in the jamb. I wrote an article about doing this project that was published in the March, 2004 issue of bus Conversions Magazine. Hope this helps, Jack |

I wish I had a copy of the mag, Jack. (Now, all I have to do, is find out what a "nader pin" is). |

Years ago, occasionaly a car door would come open during an impact, throwing the occupant out. Ralph Naders safety crusade spurred the development of the modern door latches we see today. These are the latches that have a pin approx. 1/2" in diameter sticking out of the jamb. While they do keep the doors shut during an impact, the doors are more difficult to open by emergency crews. (Sometimes it is easier to cut the hinges). When this type latch was first installed on cars, we referred to to this pin as a "Nader pin". Your history lesson for today, Jack |

Hope this helps, Jack PS: the album with the cats are our 2 Bengal Cats. They are 1/6th Asian Leopard. |

Jack, Thanks for the directions. That Door Latch looks somewhat complex. I think I will just use a simple dead-bolt & door handle for now.(S M. H.). |

Thanks for the info on the latch, Jack! I might do with a handle and dead-bolt for the time being also until I get going with the serious side of things. What did you use, if anything, to make the door easier to swing open and closed? Oh.... isn't there any way to utilize the existing door catch assembly? It appears to have more substance than the catch for a lightweight truck door. I'd like to make the door as easy as possible for my wife.to unlock/open and close/lock. |

Jack with the setup you have on the door lock does the air lock come into play at all? That is does it use the air system? Or is it no longer needed? |

Although the air lock could be left in and controlled manually, we removed ours. By removing our air lock and the panel on the rearward side of the stair well, we were able to gain approx. 3 1/2" width for the new steps. Jack |

While using the OEM door opener, we noticed it quite a bit of effort to open and close the door. After removing the OEM opener, it was like a totally different door, no effort needed to open and close. We did leave the "limiting rod" that prevents tthe door from opening to far. This rod is under the dash inspection panel on the passenger side top of the dash. Jack |

You did a helluva job, Jack! All your work and effort produced a unit that FAR exceeds the quality of a commercially built RV. I thought about printing out some pictures to give me some incentive, but quickly realized that I just don't have enough energy anymore, to complete that kind of a project. There's a ton of great ideas to work with, though and I'll likely be stealing a few. The truck door catch is a good idea. Unless I find some other way to make use of the existing OEM air lock, I 'll likely be doing it your way. The air lock on the bus I have, doesn't appear to function. The lever under the dash, used to turn on/off the air, flops freely. Gee... the more I look, the more I find wrong.. hmmm... Are all used "church buses" like this? (rhetorical question) |

Thanks for the compliment. Working as a paramedic/firefighter (24 hours on/48 hours off), I have 2 days out of 3 to work on the bus. This certainly keeps me off the streets and out of trouble LOL. You are welcome to "steal" any ideas that work for you. After all, I "stole" most of them from someone else. Sounds like maybe the air supply to that manual switch has been disconnected. If this is true, it is probably because there was leak. There is also a micro switch under the dash at the base of the OEM door closer handle and a solenoid valve in the spare tire compartment. If the air lock is working, you should hear a sound coming from the air lock when you shut the door and push the handle to the "lock" position with the master switch on. Jack |

Thanks for the info Jack. I'll take a look later and see whazzhapinin'. The more I look this bus over, the more wrong I find that needs fixing. I'll have to consider it all as part of the hazing exercise to being a member of the Bus Nut community. |
