Hi All,

I had to drill a 2.5 inch hole in the floor of my coach so I could run an electrical cord through it since there was no way to plug in without leaving my bay door open. It clipped one of my ribs and I wondered if this will create any structural integrity issues.

Thanks,
Kat

Kat, I have a blacksmith friend who has travelled around for 20 years with the bays on his 4104 full of blacksmith stuff & tools. His bus weighs 40,000lbs loaded compared to our 4104 which is 24,000 with full fuel, water & holding tanks as well as tools motor oil, etc. Greyhound frequently shipped replacement engines transmissions, etc to other maintenance points by loading them in the baggage bays of passenger coaches. These old coaches were astoundingly overbuilt. Your bus should be fine.

Hi Jim,

Thanks! I didn't think so but just wanted to make sure. My 4106 weighs on at just under 25K dry weight, according to the scale cert I have. I wonder, should I seal the opening to the clipped strut?

Thanks,
Kat

We did on ours so crap didn't get into channels. You could use some expanding foam to seal it We also made a disc with a screw on one side so we could rotate it to close the hole when not in use. You should have some kind of seal around the cord while in use so mice can't come in.

Unless you enjoy mice roaming around, I'd recommend sealing the hole. especially with a cord dangling out of it.

I PUT A HOLE IN MY SIDE DOOR AND put a 120v twist-lock receptacle so i never have to open the door.

On MCI's the center section actually hang from the upper floor frame and is just filler between the jacking points. yes it holds weight but only the weight in the bays. Look in the book it tells all about that. Maybe the same for the GM's ?

A pvc pipe (the size of the hole or closest) with threaded plug works good for that. I used spray foam to fasten the pipe in place.

Unscrew the plug, insert cable. If parked for long period, I stuff a rag around cable to stop the rodents.

Personally I prefer the twist lock plug for power cords, but my access hole(s) is used for many different functions....eg water line...

Thanks everybody! I am going to seal the strut that was clipped and am installing a rubber seal around the hole with a telescoping center so it is tight around the cord. I'm pretty sure that will work.

Thanks to all of the vets out there for your service!
Kat
