Hey guys, thanks for the input on my boat project. I did a little research and found out that Shellac is actually water soluble, so I won't be using the BIN. There's an oilfield supply store nearby, and they sell some stuff called "Tank and Rig paint" that will stick to anything and is tougher than nails, maybe I'll give that a try.

In the past I've painted my little projects with exterior semi-gloss Latex house paint, and this has worked surprisingly well. Given that my toys spend 95% of their time out of the water, just about anything will work.

Here is a link to some pictures.

I'm interested in doing a skoolie conversion (can you imagine a skoolie with two of these little boats strapped to the roof? - Think they'd let me in the Shangri-La $100 a night campground at Martha's Vineyard? LOL) I've been reading this and the other board for a while and I've learned a lot here. When I had this question about materials I thought of you guys.

Ok, enough from the wannabe in the peanut gallery. Let's get back to the GMC's and MCI's, with maybe a remark or two about Bluebirds just to keep it interesting. Thanks for the replies.

Moderator, thank you for tolerating my off topic post. You have a great group of users here and I just had to pick their brains.

that (Polyester Resin) would be the next best thing to Epoxy and much cheaper.

I'm not sure tank paint sticks to wood.

Polyester resin doesn't stick to wood for long if it gets wet.
Many Tiawan Tub boats had ply decks ,under 1/4 inch of GRP, most didn't last a decade.

I would only paint with 2 part epoxy for this dink , as not adding water (lots of weight) is as important as surface protection.

If you use 2 part epoxy , be sure to wear gloves ,
AND after everything has hardened in a couple of days scrub every surface with any brand of detergent (removes Amine).

Hey FF, I know you're a seadog as well...

I think it will stick better than tank paint though....

Pretty much any GRP over ply will fail if the ply get saturated and rots. If you can saturate the ply with Epoxy, you have something. I was actually thinking about replacing one of the extremely Ugly aluminum moulding strips on my bus (Hey, I'm On-topic!) with teak or mahogany or the like, in which case I would make a vacuum chamber and immediately paint the board with Epoxy prior to installation.... I don't know how the finish would look...one of my nuttier idears.

In any case, our advice to use Epoxy has long since departed from his desigh requirement of dirt cheap. However IMO your greatest cost is labor, so why not preserve it.

What do I know, all my boats are made of steel.

OK Gary you peaked my interest with the "all my boats are made of steel" comment. Tell me more. My first livaboard was a 63' steel hull ketch penned by Sparkman Stephens. Bought it at an auction and spent 3 years making it habitable and seaworthy. She was 44 tons and powered by a Cummins triple nickle

Hey Jim. Don't tease me. Seriously, If you want it, lets get something going, or I'm going to have send it out to the great shipyard in the sky....can't afford drydock on it anymore.

I typed the whole story on how I ended up with two gigantic rusty boats, but My computer vaporlocked and lost it all.....damn.

I'll do it again in a bit.

Hey Two Dogs, where are you? I might take you up on that!

Seriously, I will not put $100 worth of epoxy on $45 worth of lumber. The hours I work in the shop designing machinery are valuable indeed, just ask my boss, but the hours I work in my shop building my little boats are better than free. I'd almost pay for the privilege of doing it. I'll paint the little beast with some kind of exterior house paint, keep it touched up, and if the thing returns to the sawdust from whence it came in 5 years that just means I get to build another one.

Some of the Soya-Alkyd based stuff is very good. I happen to be in Marietta Ohio, which is the home of Vanguard Paints Inc. I'll check with them and see what's in the thrift shop.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't mean to get such a spirited debate started.

Casper,

BTW Gary M, The point of using teak is that you don't have to do much with it. A little tung oil once in a while to keep it looking nice is all it will ever need. Putting epoxy on teak is like painting Stainless Steel. The mahogany on the other hand,,,
