I Have an Eagle 01, with a 6.5kw onan generator installed in the second bay on the drivers side with appox.16 x 20 opening. It seems that the generator runs Hot, anyone have any suggestions as how to improve ventilation?
Thanks, Robert

put a 16x20 box fan right up next to the door & suck out the heat...110 volt...runs when gen. is on...also....think about drilling 3/8 holes in the floor behind the gen. for some fresh air in

A bunch of 3/8 holes will NOT be enough.

Is this an air cooled or radiator cooled genset? If it's an air cooled, you will need to open a hole in the bay floor where the gen's air outlet is. Make the hole about 1/2" bigger than the duct for wiggle room. As for the intake, the 16 x 20 seems fine. But make sure your intake & outlet air come from different directions so you don't recirculate.

If your genny is radiator cooled, then the fan should blow out thru the radiator. You can make a tin duct to take the rad air out. Rule of thumb is that intake & outlet ducts & openings should be 1.5 x the square inches of the radiator core. Be sure that the air has to go out of the compartment & can't recirculate. Foam seals on ducts, etc. should be used. Air should go in & out from different places here too.

(I have an Onan 6.5 Emerald INSIDE a sound box INSIDE a baggage bay in sunny 99+ degree Florida.)

everybody has their own way of doing things...a big hole in a structural floor is asking for trouble...the floor IS structural....get a new 3/8 bit & drill in the bottom part of the waves, one every 3"...no strength lost

The way an Onan air cooled generator is designed, It draws cool air thru the cooling fins on the engine and discharges it below the unit.
If its mounted inside anything, whether it's a bus bay or the space shuttle, that heated air air has to be discharged unobstructed, That is thru a hole underneath the genset the same size as the discharge chute.
That source of cooling air is usuall from the side of the coach, far away from the expended air , as Jim Bob states.
Little holes in the floor wont work. And 120v fan sucking out wont work either.
Rmember, its bringing cool air in and passing it over the engine and then expelling it without obstruction that makes it cool.

I have a 7.5 Onan, desiel, liquid cooled, that I have put in the old heater core compartment on my MC8. I am going to remove the gen rad and connect to the coach system by conecting to the exsisting heater conections. I have built a insulated box around it and put a couple of 120 volt fans, (inlet and outlet) to remove the passive heat.
Is this going to work?

depending on the length/size of hose, you may need a booster pump to make the coolant circulate properly... everytime the coolant changes hose/line materials, there exists an opportunity for cavitation... especially if the suction has any restriction... suggest that you hook up a water manometer on the suction side of your genset before you remove the existing radiator and measure the suction that the gensets' water pump puts out.... then duplicate that with your new plumbing... you will also need a way to "bleed" the air from the generator cooling system....it may require more engineering than just hooking up lines....

Although I was an early reader and speller, I only learned to spell squirrel recently, and that was in reference to my work (Computers)

People ask me "What's Wrong" and I tell them "Your system has Squirrels" I know that because something is damn squirrelly.

Thanks guys, I was thinking of installing a fan in the opeoning and sucking air from the outside and blowing across the Gen. Will this work?

Just last weekend talked with an Onan generator tech in Tucson...he confirmed, almost exact words, what Artis stated....same applies to any air cooled gen.

Robert,
Since Eagles have very tall bays & the Onan air cooled set is very short, you can build a base under the set to raise it up about 12". Construct/use this base as a duct to move the heated air to the outside where you can make an outlet opening in the bottom of the bay door. This will also get your muffler up off the road into that 12" space. (Metal would be best for this base/duct.) Be sure the muffler has plenty of air space around it, no combustible stuff near and that the exhaust comes outside the body!

Two Dogs:
I don't know anything about Eagle Model 1s, but I do know that later birds have a steel frame under the bays & that converters routinely cut the aluminum floor which is made up of many extruded (interlocking?) aluminum strips riveted together.

Jim-Bob....good idea, but clarify for us. Are you saying to "box" in the base, put the muffler in the box as well as an outlet in the floor for venting and exhaust?

Thanx.
