Looks like Gary isn't the only one dealing with idiots/lunatics in 25+ ton vehicles. I had a Prevost with the graphics of a local company fly past me (with my wife in her Cherokee) on the highway. Off the top of my head, the unsafe/illegal stuff was: In the left lane (not allowed) Running 85+MPH in a 65 zone (I was running 75-80 & he passed me) Changed lanes twice without signalling Following too close (about 5' from my bumper) Cut off a car Rear engine access cover not secured I got the bus number...who can I call to get this clown canned, & should I do it? |

Yeah, I'd say so. If for no other reason than showing off. My ultra-low-geard BB can't get past 65, but it gets there REAL fast. Gary |

Hey wait a minute.... "in the left lane, not allowed"... Um... I may be totally stupid but at least in California, "I think" busses and motorhomes ARE allowed in any lane they feel like driving in. Trucks are confined to the righthand two, but not us... If that's not correct, there are one heck of a lot of greyhound drivers, motorhome drivers, and ME that are breaking the law constantly... But other than that, sounds like the Prevost driver was a real jerk!!! Cheers Gary S |

Quite a few western states... Oregon for one. Washington has a general "keep right except to pass" law which applies to everyone. Heavy vehicles not allowed in left lane if there are three or more lanes in a given direction. |

Trucks, busses, etc are only allowed to use the left lane to pass, then they are supposed to get back to the "Travel" Lane. this is for Oregon and California. Not sure about Washington. Gary |

Most places I've been to out west don't have such restrictions. Based on the number of busses I've watched go thundering past me in the left lane in California, I'd say it was a widely abused law. As a general rule, the coach drivers I've run into have had very good road manners, this Prevost driver is an exception, in the extreme. Brian |

Yes they absolutely do. If they are thundering past you, they are passing you. they are legal. They are just not allowed to "Travel" in the "Passing" lane. I think you are right about it being an abused law though, just look at how many on this list never heard of it. My buddy John got a left lane ticket leaving my place in Alameda, on Hwy 80. He was actually passing slower traffic, but the CHP wouldn't argue the point. He was in a big Monaco Pusher. pulling a toad. Nobody was waiting on him. You're right, most are professionals, I have questions about the tour bus operators--especially...dare I say it?....the Chinese ones. Gary |

If you're not in California, nor have experience with California Highways, you wouldn't understand. I been travelling over 80 in a 65 and been passed by cops. Gary |

I wouldn't call drivers that routinely drive faster than most places in the country "Bad". In fact they'd better be better. Also, here in MI, the flow of traffic is 80 most of the time. The Truck Driver that I mentioned had Tenesee plates. Gary |

That sign is in Rhode Island. Thru Providince, it applies to the left 2 lanes of a 4-lane highway. "Sounds to me like the Kettle calling the Pot black Running 85+ in a 65 zone [I was running 75-80 and he passed me]" I was in the center lane, running with traffic, passing a loaded semi. The normal traffic speed on this road is 70-80--running 75, I'm passed regularly. Also, I was driving a 3650lb Jeep, not a 50,000lb coach with 50 people on board. There's a BIG difference between 80 in a car & 85+ in a Prevost. |

I think the worst example of policing highways was when I was driving my Apollo with a CJ-7 toad and we were travelling to Vegas on the 95 through Searchlight. We were passed the towns and on the open 3 lane highway when this cop put on his roof lights and pulled in front of me motioning me to pull onto the shoulder, then he drove off. I pulled back onto the highway and he slowed down and motioned me to the shoulder again and then drove away. I was travelling at the 55mph speedlimit without any problems, but he wanted me to drive the shoulder to let speeding traffic pass me easier. I can just imagine the next cop along or what would happen if I hit someone because of a pedestrian walked out from the brush onto the shouder or another vehicle suddenly pulled off the highway with a flat or seized motor. "Well Officer, this cop told me to drive on the shoulder at 55mph"...... "Yeah sure, have this book of tickets to be getting on with........." Needless to say, as he disappeared into the distance I pulled back onto the highway along with another motorhome, travelling a distance behind me, that had received the same treatment. Peter. |

the need for speed does not apply to all of as some still drive 4104"s and enjoy them , having sthat to say at 55- 60 is where i run as most of our highways here are 55 or 60 so when i drive if some comes running up behind me then i slow down and run as close the shoulder as i can to give them room to pass, some times they roar by going up hill some times down hill and i let them go but those that blow a motor or burn out their brakes on the way down and i wave as i putt putt by enjoying what is out there to see and will even pull of to turn outs and off ramps to let the important people by without causing the any delay.. |

55-60 here is, bluntly, almost suicidal on most highways. Even 65-70 means you're a rolling road hazard. Gary: Not sure where you came up with THAT notion. I'll never live in Kalifornia. |

My schooly (1965 Gillig) goes 53 MPH Tops, I live in Ca. I drive on I 5, 99, 101,580, 1, 12, I 80, I 40, & 58, fairly regulary. It is my opinion that on Highways with 3 or more lanes (in one direction) are much safer than roads with fewer lanes. Example: Hwy 99 is often congested with Heavy Truck Traffic 65-74 MPH Avg. However, some Trucks go so slow even I have passed them on occation. Also, A 65 Gillig is alot taller than a passenger car or Mini-Van, So visibility of a sloooow Gillig Conv. in rt. lane is Much more Obvious than say a VW Rabit going 50. in rt. or any lane. As for the experience of "Policeing"(madbrit) I dont Know where Searchlight is, But I have ben on I 95 in Ca. (Riverside County I belive.)N-B Towards Los Vagas (one lane each way only) Blyth Ca, To I 40. Very prity Desert mountians to West & Desert Running riverbed to the East A Must see for anyone going betw. I 10 & I 40. Was The "Police Officer" that "Directed" you to the Shoulder in Nv., Ca., or Az.? P.S. I don't use Ca. 99 if I can avoid it as it is only 2 lanes for quite much of the lenth I wold travel on, & the truck drivers are somewhat in a hurry & probly tiered, as it is 4+ Hrs. from Sacramento &/or Los Angelas, Somewhat Dangerous as compared to I 5 even though I 5 Is Faster mooveing than 99. |

S.M.Heath, That cop was in Nevada. The road is classified as US Highway 95 which runs from the Mexican Border through Yuma, Blythe, runs into US Highway 93 on the Las Vegas side of Boulder City, Nv. and heads off further North after clearing the City of Las Vegas. Peter. |
