Need suggestions on what to do with my 8v71 take out. I recently installed a s-60. This engine & bus belonged to Bill Lowman. He had paid a diesel mech. over 2k to replace a cracked head & rework one side, the other side was checked and was in good shape. I drove the bus 80 miles to my house & it sat for 3 yrs. I tried to sell on this bbs, went to a detroit repair in Houston & to the marine people in Freeport Tx. They had interesting suggestions, one for instance would call for me buying a 50' boat.. anything smaller the anchor would sink the boat! A junk yard offered me $250. should I take it? It has aluminum valve covers, n65 injectors, advanced timing. Ray |

I tried to sell it. The boat people said epa problems. still used in old busses a small group as we know because it's us! It's out of an mci-8, rt hand, complete minus the starter & ring gear as it is on the ht-740 and are on the s-60. make some offers. Raylalajr@aol.com |

"Any comments about the process of putting an s60 into an mci 8?" The gent I know who is sticking one in a 9 sez be really carefull. On his design he reinforced the motormounts to about 200% of stock , but a visit to a gargage that had a new MCI with engine pulled , convinced him to copy what the factory is now doing and shoot for 400% beefier than stock. Aparently the 60's pounding is very severe , and can cause stress cracks, scaring the factory into a major reinforcement upgrade. FAST FRED |

Bruce to answer your question, changing to a series 60 is a challange, but thats what I like! I like pain! actually it's not bad if you are comitted to doing the right thing and making it safe. The benifits are great for the newer engine but it's research and work. This bbs made it possible for me. The engine cradle and its supports need reinforcing. I choose to keep the ht-740 instead of spending $12k or more on a allison world trans. To do this I had to change the stator for a different stall speed. I also whent to a digital modulator to talk to the DDEC3. Next you get into gear ratios because of the ht-740. I had a suspension machine shop change the center carrier mounting flange so I could put a later model carrier in the rearend. I went to a 2.69 ratio so I could have some top end on this lower turning engine. I have had to extend the rear of the bus 2 ft for the longer engine. I still need to extend the upper roof to match, I'm just waiting on some hat channel roof bows. I also side mounted the radiator. So there is alot to do, but it's worth it to me. I've never lost focus or drive to build it right it just takes time. Hope this helps & do it your way just consider the amount of work! Rayshound |
