Any sudgestions on gear oil to use on 1965 Gillig Schooly with Fuller 5 manual trans. & also the single reduction drive axel? tempature when I drive is not likely to be below freezing. Spec-plate is still on bus but is old & multi-Viscosity Gear oil is likely to be the only lube to use thease days. I do not want to spend a lot of $, synthetic is not an option for me...To expensive! Thanks in advance. S.M. H.

I would not use regular 40wt unless it has a fair content of sawdust also, or oatmeal.

You have to use a hypoid gear oil in the differential. For above freezing something like 85-140 will do. In 1965 they likely used the same oil in the transmission and differential but you can get by with #50 straight gear oil if your seals are good.

Oh no, this looks to be (potentialy) another numorus threaded subject. I don't mean to start an arguement here. I probly, will use heavy multi-vis. hypoid gear oil in differential with some "power-punch" additive (made spasificaly for adding to Gear Oil) & 85-90 Wt. gear oil in trans. (or thereabouts). Thanks, T.D., Stan & Geof. T.D. Maybe someone put that 40-wt. with that oatmeal mix in that mouse infested oil-bath air cleaner of yours! LOL! S.M. H.

I just went out & looked at the spec placard on Gillig &, it says SAE 90 for trans above 20 deg.f & SAE 140 for differencial @ same temp. range. I was just trying to see if anyone had any expereance and/or knowlage that may be of consequence. T.D. I guess I did get the whom mixed-up on the oil-bath mice. I have had 2 air-cooled VW engines compleatly destroyd by field mice, They made nests in the eng. compartment between the cyelenders just above the pushrod tubes, Both engines siesed without the oil warning light going on. I have yet not decided if I dislike VW's or mice more. I do know one thing, It is easyer to get rid of my VW than the mice! (Chucle) S.M. H.

T.D., I did listen (read). I Don't have a spicer. it is a Fuller 5 speed( I Don't know if it makes a diference). also seals are most likly old. Also shafts & yoke may even be a little grooved. I suspect 40 wt. wold be to thin for now until I replace the gearset (or seals in both)in differencial anyway. When I first posed the question I did not expect the 40 Wt. to be for this old of a bus with orig. trans & diff. I apricate all of the advise from all of the BusNuts here @ this website. As far as waveing as you go by is concerned until I re-gear the diff., I may not see but a blurr of your bus none-the-less a wave...LOL. S.M. H.
