We need advice please. We are changing our manual to an HT740, on an 8-71. We need advice as to size of a supplemental water to oil tranny cooler, so we can figure a location for it.
Thanks.

detroit makes a double oil cooler for the 8v71.... it mounts just like the single oil cooler on the side of the engine... it's just twice as big.... unless you can find a used one, for the housing, plan on spending at least $12-1500 for it... its already sized for the alison ht740... ask for a "48 plate cooler"...

Just get a remote transmission cooler like you see on transits with V730's. Call Nimco, but if you get a used one make absolutely sure it didn't come off a transmission with metal in the pan.

I put a trans oil cooler on my MCI MC8. I used a 16X16 oil cooler from a hydrolic press. It has 1" lines and does a good job. I put it on the acess door on the right side. I cut a 16" square hole in the door. I put a 16" fan on it that I bought from JC Whitney. There are others avaible that move more air. This takes a lot of the heat away from the engine. Works for me. If you have any questions post them here.

My MT644 on a 8V71 in a Prevost Champion S41 (35') has a "cooler/exchanger" plumbed into the engine cooling system. It's a cylinder, approx. 6" X 24" through which transmission oil & engine coolant circulate.
The transmission temp gauge normally reads around 150 deg. Mountain driving doesn't affect the temp much. The gauge may climb to 180 when doing a lot of start/stop in traffic. Never seen it read above 190.

D A here in Oregon quoted us $4000 for all parts for a double oil cooler. More than we care to spend, thanks. We will be looking for a smaller less expensive solution. Thanks for the replies!
Has anyone used a Hayden brand cooler?

What if you use more than one heat exchanger. Would that help any? Being that I have three or four around my little shop.
