Has anybody ever tried to replaced the old 12 volt black box transistorized regulator with an ordinary (heave duty maybe)auto or truck regulator? I don't know why it would not work. Or amI wrong? You know what old age does to the brain.

AL4106: If price is the problem then u don't even want to hear about the new replacement for the full electronic one used with DDEC II and above. $270, non repairable. U can buy any or all of the components to rebuild your unit from Digi-Key online, or Delco makes complete rebuild kits for them. Two Dogs is correct, u need what u have. My last exposure was abt $75 for a rebuilt exchange.

Unfortunately price and money is always a problem. And fortunately there is a place about 5 miles from me that rebuilds them. This is the second time it's gone out on me. The first time they rebuilded it for me, wasn't to bad. Around
$100. I just thought maybe I could used one from a car or truck. Well from all of you saying the same thing, I think I got the message. Thanks guys I knew I could count on you. AL

with those transistorized regulators, you want to make sure that you never boost start. When using a high output charger you should throw the disconnect switch to off.

You can use an after market regulator without problem. However you do need one that can output at least 8 amps to the generator fields.
