My Pop always said, (when buying a used item)..."It's worth exactly what someone will pay for it...no more...no less!". Needless to say this truism is pretty frustrating when you're trying to price an item for sale. I decided to take a poll...a concensus, so to speak, right from this horse's anatomy group of used bus parts experts. What's my DD671N worth? It has 10,000 miles on it, was remanufactured by Diesel Exchange, runs perfect. It also had replaced at that time: pressure plate, flywheel, clutch and bearing, compressor, Delco 160A belt drive alternator, aluminum valve cover, primary/secondary fuel filters, spin-on oil filter, water pump. And, if you're interested in hearing/seeing/buying it before it comes out...let me know. Thanx, Rdub |

Right hand engine or a left hand engine? Does it have paperwork on the overhaul? Where are you? What do you want for it? Has it been stored outside or inside? How many months since it has been run? |

Additional specs; it is a left hand, it has all the dyno testing graphs and specs as well as overhaul paperwork. (238hp/550+torque if I remember...I'll dig out the file). |

Assuming degojo is correct, that would make a freshly overhauled 475 HP 8V92, dyno checked Allison 754 with all the factory radiators, cooling fans, intake and exhaust systems worth how much? Onward and Upward Marc Bourget |

An out-of-frame rebuild by a good dd shop is between $9k and $14k. Southern oregon diesel quotes that range, for instance. I don't know what the price is on transmission work, but figure something over a grand and under 4 grand. Appropriate radiators and other stuff are probably worth a grand or so, if you buy them from a bus salvage yard. so: 9+1+1 = 10k, low end. $19k high end. That's for replacement value. What you can sell it for depends on what the market at the time will bear. Some guy sitting in north dakota with a bus that needs a new engine now... well, that guy might wanna pay a little more. some guys on ebay might wanna pay a little less. You can buy an 8v92 in a bus carcass for between $3 and 5K every now and then on ebay, and it includes 10 tons of scrap metal as packaging. (which will probably sell for a fair price in a scrapyard these days, actually -- might even pay for shipping.) |

Thanx for the input! By the way, I should re-state that this was a "re-manufacture", not an overhaul. The crank, cylinders, valves, etc. were installed at original specs...not over/under-sized. Rdub |

It sure sounds like you have a gem Rdub, but I suppose part of the equation of "How much can I get for it?" depends on how long you can wait before it gets sold. My personal feeling, (having been a Diesel Mechanic for over 25 years) is that with the paperwork you probably could get top dollar if you wait long enough, but more likely you'll be able to sell it for a couple thousand more than the cost of the rebuild and work a seperate deal for the rest. My advise is to price the unit at what you yourself feel is the lowest amount that will make you happy to sell it for, then add a little for "wiggle room" Brian |

On a related note--what would a "fair" price for a good, used, strong-running 2-53 or 2-71 Detroit be? |
