OK here is a weird one, series 60, 746 Allison provost 1994, starts and runs fine, put in gear step on throttle it comes to a complete stop, still running, just wont move, will Idle along about 1/5 mph. reverse the same, was running fine earlier today, then decided at every stop light it would bog WAY down and finally pick up and run fine, for about 30 miles, THEN decided it will not play anymore, and now , every time you step on the pedal forward or backward it stops SUDDENLY. put in neutral and rev it up fine, put it in any gear and it wont rev past 10,000 or move in either direction.let it idle in gear and it seems fine, Now this afternoon backing up to the shop when in reverse the rear drive axle locked and jumped a little, Now lets hear the Ideas, the shop does not have one Yet, all help here is appreciated, and will update you all when the problem is found.

Bill

If the drive axle jumped a little, that would seem that your brakes are locking the axle and preventing you from rolling freely.
Another thought, is the rear end in the process of packing up

Bill,
Drop the driveshaft and, put it in gear, rev it up and see what happens. If the output yoke turns fine, and the engine revs up ok, the problem is in the differential, a wheel bearing, or the emergency brake valve. If it won't rev, the trans is in trouble. If you're still locked up and unable to push it, pull the axles out and push again. If it rolls free this time, its the diff, if not the brakes are locked, or a wheel bearing has failed.

I side with Joe on a failing diff, although I am having problems with it coming and going, so my bet is the trans.

I posted on Bcm to problem seems you got good advice. Last though not posted here was lift tag and try first. there was prob there in early 90's will explain don't make sense but was unique to Prevost of that time frame. Doesn't cost anything to test. Wishing you a low dollar out come other thought was loose brake shoe in drum on low dollar end. Bob

I am not familiar with the 746 Allison but the symtoms remind me of problems I have encountered with some Marine Gears. You might be having problems with the valve body that controls the pressure to the clutch packs. If the reverse and forward are both getting pressure then it won't move unless you rev it up and one overrides the other which might break it loose temporararly but will wind up burning one clutch pack out. Sometimes cleaning the valve body can resolve it.
I would call Luke @ 1-888-262-2434.
Good Luck,

Check your brake cans and see if they are releasing as well as low pressure. Sounds to me like the problem I had. My brakes were not releasing until I really pressed them hard and finally they released. Are you getting any smoke from the back axcle area when moving. Just saying.

no smoke and it coast fine. will even move at an idle when in gear, just stops dead when you touch the throttle, here is a new update...Well its still at the shop. they didn't have a chance to look at it till Monday,, they did have to move it, AND it started like always, put it in gear, it went forward like it should, put it in reverse and it backed in the shop as it should. Now seem since it cooled down it wants to drive normal, even when it was acting up. if you got it moving it shifted Thur all the gears fine, just if you stopped it would lock up on every take off, the engine temp was 198 the trans temp was 200, Any more thoughts, I am sure the shop could use a few hints as its their first of this kind, thanks Bill

Then sounds like the tranny. It coasts so not neutral but does it when in 1st gear and reverse and is warmed up. Maybe fluid change and filter because it is low or a vein is plugged with something or fluid is burned and low?

If it was a ring gear or even 1 tooth as some has said it won't be moving and if was would be making all kinds of noises back there.

Possible drive shaft bolts missing or somehow is at the wrong angle because of bolts missing?

If you have air throttle is there a leak if not is there a break in the cable?
Sorry all i got.

Dave

My money is on the torque converter or the stator rollers the little keepers springs break and do damage to the front of the transmission
