I had an engine put in my 4108 and V730. The guys who put it in removed some of the rivots and bolts that hold some of the panels together. The didn't replace them all and said they weren't needed.

I climbed under the engine compartment and by the rear axle. I looked at it carefully and I think all of the holes should be bolted.

Can someone explain to me the theory behind how the rear frame is constructed? What is the structual analysis? After all is said and done can a heavy duty trailer hitch be installed? If so, what is the best way?

Thanks for the info and have a great day.

I understood this to require opening up the "tranny" hole in the engine firewall.

The installation requires beefing up the hole with doubler plates to do it properly.

GM issued an installation manual for this. I had one for awhile when I was thinking of a 4905 but passed it on to another busnut. It should be available.

The rear bulkhead was beefed up by adding an approximately 2x2 ft steel plate between the two vertical members in the center of the bulkhead. From the pass. side of the bulk head, to the steel plate there isn't much left, below the top of the tran. Is this enough to support the engine properly? Or, what/how is the engine supported?

if you can get one, there is an article in may 2004 bus conversion mag on a automatic conversion in a 4905. he addreses that problem of cutting away part of the bulkhead to make room. seems to have figured it out pretty good. he came down off of the pass side air beam w/ 3/8" x 3 1/2x3 1/2 angle and bolted to existing cradle mount. weight of engine is now hanging off air beam like gm design.

Rearmost support for engine/ transmission is the roof! Tansmission support at right rear corner is important but often skipped.
