Hi Mclough, Measure the outside diameter of the brake chamber around its widest circumference, then use the charts below to determine which brake you have: Clamp Type Brake Chamber Data
Type | O/S Dia " | O/S Dia mm | 6 | 4 1/2 | 114 | 9 | 5 1/4 | 133 | 12 | 5 11/16 | 145 | 16 | 6 3/8 | 162 | 20 | 6 25/32 | 172 | 24 | 7 7/32 | 184 | 30 | 8 3/32 | 206 | 36 | 9 | 229 | "Long Stroke" Clamp Type Brake Chamber Data

If the mechanic means a combination spring and service brake when he refers to a 30/30 then it definitely won't fit. If your 4104 has a driveline parking brake then you use a singe 30 can. If you have an air operated parking brake, it will be a DD-30. |

If your 4104 doesn't already have spring brakes, this is the time to add them. Mine has them and it uses 30/30 double cans. It is a bear to get them fitted. You will need to keep the part of your current (original) can that fastens to the bus. New brake cans have the spring chamber swaged so you can not disassemble it, but the service end comes apart. You will have to shave off the 1' aluminum angle that is riveted to the fwd bulkhead. You will need to carefully orient the old original section of the can to the new section so that the ports are oriented towards the top to keep the air hoses from rubbing other stuff under there. I also cut about 3/8" off the upper attaching stud so the can could be rotated up into position, it's that close. But that allows the can to be removed without jacking up the vehicle removing the shocks & dropping the axle down 2" to get the can in place. You will not have to alter the length of the push rod. You Freightliner guy can also set you up with the extra relay valve, hoses & fittings, 3/8"? nylon air tubing & driver's parking/emergency valve to complete the installation. See if you can run the tubing forward through the tunnel at the top center of the bays. If you run it under the bus it is exposed to damage. Change the service brake hoses too if they don't look new. Even if you have the original driveshaft park brake, YOU SHOULD ADD THE SPRING BRAKES especially if you are replacing rear cans. When you decide where to put the "Yellow Knob" up front, install it where a passenger could get to it if something happened to you AND where a dog can not push the button down by stepping on it when you are outside the bus. (Guess how I know this??) I had mine mounted on the switch panel to the left of the driver. I suggest the vertical surface of the dash above the throttle pedal. |

The new current design 30/30 spring cans I just bought will not fit the 4104! The cans you have on there probably have the original portion of the can that mounts to the vehicle. That would be the part of the can closest to the threaded rod and which includes the mounting studs. The current cans have a flat mounting surface. The original can had standoffs built into the can and the distance from the face to the end of the rod is different. If your mechanic says you can't disassemble or re orient the service portion of the brake cans you need to find a more knowledgeable mechanic. To own a 4104 you will need to learn your bus pretty well. It will take time. You will need to know just about as much as the mechanic or they will make you crazy (& poor). Can you post pictures of the cans that are on the bus? |

ty jim-bob, i just got off phone with freightliner and they are taking can around to parts stores to find a match. i guess the front portion of can is the part thats shot. maybe i should sell this thing and get an eagle or newer that uses stock parts!!! this bus was donated to our ministry and is in good shape except for a few little headaches(like the brake cans etc.) if i can get to the bus today i will and get photo. . |

Don't give up on a 4104. Once those cans are done right, they'll be fine for many years. We have a 4905 & an Eagle 15 too. The problem is that you have to get the bus in good shape before you need to hit the road. While many bus parts are normal big truck stuff, there are certain items on any bus which are hard to find. Most parts stores today have no clue unless they can look up what car it fits in their computer. You have to find good heavy truck parts stores. Freightliner SHOULD know where these are. If they can't figure this out, they (or you) should take the new and the old cans to a truck "brake & spring" shop. They should know how to deal with it. |
