Are 102 radiators thicker than MC-8 rads? My bus heat is gone, misters? Can a 3 pass aluminum rad be used in series with the left bus rad? My MC-8 is TMC now with 8-71TA (375hp) HT740trans with air oil cooler (no trans oil to water). I like 55-65 but on long up grades or heavy head winds 50-55 are a challange, the grades on I-40, manual down shifts are needed. I normally watch the temp guage and slow to cool, usually takes a 1-3 minutes on level at 10 MPH slower, on grades 4-10 minutes parked. Oh new 170 thermostats and manual temp guage in engine , and IR thermometer also. New pulleys on engine and fans, seals on rads have foam, cleaned fins. Actually had to stop on Yarnell Az. hill on way up and in Skull Valley. I know cooling was marginal! I live in it fulltime, and will be towing a Dodge, 2500, 4x4 with my RZR on it, had a Grand Cherokee. 4, 210watt solar pannels, 6 golf cart batts, 100gallon fresh water. |

Ralph I saw a MC8 in Edmonton that was put together by a lifelong DD mechanic and he installed a supplimental radiator on the front of the bus above the bumper. Nice inconspicuus instalation. He had a 8v92.for engine, so power wise probably close to yours. |

The physical space the rads fit in are different after the MC8. Some modification to the space is required to fit the later, larger rads. How were the big lines to the front for the stock heater terminated? Some mistakenly loop them, and unintentionally create a significant hot water bypass around the radiators. happy coaching! buswarrior |

Ralph - One of the biggest reasons for overheating a two-stroke Detroit, especially on an MCI, is waiting too long to downshift to a lower gear. I've seen in time and time again during my professional career. Not a pretty sight, especially when carrying paying passengers. Pulling a grade at 55 in 4th will send the temps soaring VERY quickly - far better to drop to 3rd and enjoy the ride at 45 - 50. Shift it manually - don't let the 740 do it on it's own, because by the time it does, you're already too slow for the next lower gear. Because of the marginal cooling capacity, you really have to DRIVE an MCI, not sit back simply "stabbing 'n steering." FWIW & HTH. . .

BW the lines were blocked on each side so the drivers/defroster is intact. I have a ??? of how the 2 defroster/heator motors are wired, one broke a mount bolt so I replaced it(motor), but now the braker blows while on high after only a short time, but runs on low fine. Also the air filter is now on the Right side with a 7 inch Dimm. inlet of out side air, and goes straight into turbo. The muffler is new and much less restriction, than the big original. Right side door has a 12 in. dim. hole, left rear, side door will be reskined when I get screen, left rear screened above the plate. |

RJ, I need to figure the best time, Have down shifted but not quick, yes I need, and want to keep it at top RPM. But I do not mind 15-20 over the top, not bashful of using 4 ways in slow lane. My older MCI-7 was a stick and was easy to guage shift points. |

When was the last time you used Penray or a similar cleaner to help the cooling system? Most antifreeze mfg require the anti freez to be dumped every 2 or 3 years and the system cleaned. New antifreez and DISTILLED water should help. IF you dont live in heavy freeze areas only 35% antifreez 65% water will cool better than 50/50. FF |

My plan, if needed, is to add a third radiator in series with the passenger side stock radiator. I wonder if anyone has ever done that? Brian |

On the turbo engines like the 8v92 cooling is not a problem when you go to the air to air cooler for the turbo works for me |

OK ??? How and where do I locate (install) the air to air and it needs lots of air ???? There is little room back there and turbo lag? How much work/parts/fab.? As for rad in series, my left rear corner is vacent( oil bath cleaner gone). Good hot rod 3 or 4 pass rad may fit?? Luvrbus I am down here in Salome till mid or late April. and I would like to get my Jakes working. Also there was a 8-92 conversion that had 2 rads in series but the mechanic did not rember what size, and that was in Pa.. |

I know of a 35' GM with an upgraded drive train and 6V92 that runs two stock rads mounted tightly together. If you didn't know what you were looking at, it looks completely normal. happy coaching! buswarrior |

Cooling is in the surface area extra capacity helps but not that much I found out the hard way move enough air over the surface they run cool A 8v92TA takes 1400 sq inches and they run cool all manufactures have a sq inch spec to go by good luck |

Interesting that my return to the BB is occasioned by an offer to sell something. Anybody interested in the radiators and fans out of a MCI-9 set up for a 475 HP 8v92?? You can have everything including sheetmetal. Ralph, I also have a dyno'd 754 5 sp which might help you get that 375 HP "8" up the hills better than that 740 Onward and upward, Marc Bourget |
