My bus will be out of service for some time. I broke the engine with 50 gal of diesel still in the tank. Is there anything that I can do to preserve this fuel until the engine repairs are done sometime next spring? |

Fill the tank really full (to get rid of air which can condense water) and get some Bio Bor or similar fuel bug killer, and treat the fuel. The diesel will sit fine for a couple of years with these precautions. You will need to preserve the engine TOO! In Da Book by DD. FAST FRED |

Pump the fuel out and sell it to someone, refill when needed. |

Isn't diesel pretty stable? I didn't think there was a big storage issue. Gary |

Depends on the climate... A couple of years back, here in the desert, I threw a battery in a tractor that had sat in the same spot for three years, I figured it was worth a try, if it started and ran somewhat...great , if not we'd have to tow it ... It fired right up and ran like a champ. But there are some nasty stuff that will grow in diesel, and certainly a little stabilizer won't hurt anything Brian |

The BioBor that FF recommends is the best on the market for long term storage. Far better than AlgaeX. Available at West Marine, U.S. Marine and off the net, about $18.00 for enough to treat 250 gal. ...JJ |

I had topped off my tank about 3 years ago on a mci-8. It also has the aux tank for a total of 179 gal. after 3 years it has nasty looking stuff growing in it. looks like seaweed. Now that it is a mess would the above suggestions work? What is the best thing I could do? Thanks Ray |

Ray, You are going to need an algaecide, a stabilizer will not help you at this point, though after using the algaecide it may... Brian |

diesel the on the west coaxt of BC has a great shelf life as i had a fellow start up a 6-71 with a single 6D battery and not using any form of starting aid like starting fluid and turned the engine over about 6 times and let it sit for 30 seconds and hit the starter again and it started on the 3 rev. this bus had sat in the bush for over 12 years. we have used diesel that has sat for 8 years in our tractors with out any bad effects on the engine. there was no form of alge or any other growth in the tank. mel 4104 |
