I'm a newbie to this bus nut thing , but have a strong desire to convert a 60' articulated bus to full time service. I'd like to travel around and teach video production to underprivledged kids. So, does anybody have suggestions on a model(such as metroliner versus flexible). Plus, why don't I see articulateds converted? Is mpg's to low or aren't they allowed in parks because of long length? Lastly, does anybody know a good source to purchase one and what is a fair price?
thanks

Artics are a bad deal.......

1.the transit versions are geared entirely too low for extended highway speeds.

2. you will be hard pressed to get one in any RV park

3. The articulation is a heat loss heat gain nightmare that you probably can't overcome except while running the coach A/C

4. The pivots go bad...usually about the time a company decides to sell....and theyy are very pricey to fix.

5. You definiteley need a Class A CDL

6. Unless you get a Prevost there is little room to put any systems.......the prevost H5-60 is available pretty cheap for what it is but once again......I think the parts for the center pivot are like 20k

this is third-hand info, but I believe Articulateds are "permitted" in each municilpality.

So basically, you can't go anywhere without a special permit.

someone that knows more than I do should comment on this.

There's a company up here, called Mcillican Coach or something, running H5-60's (Two of them) on charters in western Canada... They are driven with a (Canadian) Class 2 with Air Brake Endorsement.. I suppose it's the same as a Class B? That's because it's not articulated in the sense that it disconnects, a la semi tractor....

Articulated buses are not legal in most states. In MN they only run on certain roads and have a permanat permit. Something you could not get.

Call the DOT or Highway partrol in the state where you live.

I have driven artics for twenty-five years and I wouldn't convert one to motorhome. You only need a class b cdl to drive one. They are hard to drive except down the freeway. Some do not back up. I would drive a shorter bus and pull a trailer.
