We were wondering if anyone has any comments on what kind of generator is the quietest, and which you guys prefer. We have a Kohler on our boat and had one on our last boat as well and have never had a problem with either. Thanks in advance for your input. Patti

I have a Kubota 13kw that I got from Wrico. I built a two compartment box from 3/4" plywood to remote mount the radiator and genny. Dick Wright helped me set it up. I bought his sound deadening material to kill the noise. The stuff was expensive, but I've been very pleased. 541-744-4333. He is in Oregon.

Dave, as long as you keep your hands to yourself we are cool..:)
Patti, i have been wresteling with this for along time..i have a 7.5 onan deisel, its not the unit that is quiet..its the box and venting. I learned..and i know there are some really good guys on here for this..that the exaust needs to be in a loop. out the exaust manifold, op as far as you can, back as far, forward from that and out, i thought it might restrict the exaust..but to my suprise most of the coaches have the same thing..i stole the idea from them. the more closed in and insulated the box, the more air you need to provide to cool it off, even water cooled. so pick your genset just make its surroundings tight and vented and you should be fine.
btw, i drycamp, most of the time i have vehicals about 4 to 6 feet away from mine and no complaints, well..maybe when they are sober...

I have an Izusu diesel with a 14.5 kw and it is very quiet. I can stand right beside it and carry a conversation without talking loud. I'm very happy with it. Great price too. $ 5600.00 delivered. Marc

MARC: Could you share where you bought your Izusu
generator from. I have had a Isusu Trooper for
15 years now , and it has been the best auto I have ever owned. Will be using it for a tow. The
info would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS Arthur

We have a Kohler 15KW (Yanmar engine) that would wake the dead. Radiator is mounted on engine, with air intake (with cooling fans) coming from other side of bus, around baffle, under floor. Genset exhausts through floor, then through muffler, then up through wall and out through roof. Gen compartment seems well insulated, but it is still quite loud. Challenge in making them quiet, it seems to me, is how to get intake air into gen compartment, while baffling noise of genset. Maybe I am expecting more quiet than such a set-up can deliver?

Simple soundbox design developed by Dick Wright at Wrico.

Each size of genset has a cfm requirement for the gen unit and a different, much greater, cfm for the genset radiator.

The clue to a decent soundbox is to have a minimum of two reversals on the intake and exhaust channels for the box. they're lined with sound absorbent material also. Sound don't go 'round corners very well at all, much less with absorbent material.

The name is central maine diesel. I can't remember their website ,but you can find it through a search engine. If you can't find it let me know and I will dig the info out of my file. Marc

Hi Ron and Patti,
In our 4106 we have an Onan 7.5 KW Quiet Diesel mounted in the old A/C condenser compartment that still has the screened door, so it is basicly exposed to the outside, and it is fairly quiet. It gets quieter when we put the exhaust extension up the side of the bus at a rally. It is, by far, not the quietest generator installation I have ever heard. We were parked near a new Marathon conversion one time and you could barely hear their generator, standing right next to it. Of course, I'm sure expense was no object in designing the installation and the materials used. I think quietness is related more to installation than the brand of the generator if you get a water cooled 1800 RPM diesel generator.
Thanks, Sam Sperbeck
