In September I viewed a link to some surplus 12 cylinder Detroits for sale. I do not know if they are 71s or 92s. Can one of y'all identify them for me.

Here they are - Garth

Second Query;

I've seen other pics on this BBS that are considerably bigger than mine. I really had to reduce the size and resolution to meet the 20K size limit. I had two of them at 19.7K and they still wouldn't upload (the error gave them a 20K size) - had to take them down to less than 19K.

Garth

Editor's Note: Garth, reducing both the file size and physical size of a picture for use on the Internet is a skill best learned through photo editing software tutorials or in a hands-on workshop. Less resolution is better - the new digital cameras with 3-, 4-, 5- and more-megapixels are great for printing photographs, but useless for the Internet. They typically render a print that is over a megabyte in file size. As I have been suggesting for the past 7 years, anyone wishing to post a picture, who doesn't know how to create a small digital file, can send them to me for uploading to my server. This does 2 things, first, it relieves the frustration of sending multiple experimental messages that I end up editing anyway and second, I don't have any restriction as to file size that I can upload. Ian.

12V92s are a siamesed pair of 6V92s while the 12V71 is a single block.

These are 12V71s off the govliquidation site, I believe!

Well, I just learned something new. Would have assumed (dangerous word!) that the 12V92 would have been just one block like on the 12V71, only have wet sleeves.

Now I find that is not true. Gosh...I hate getting middle aged. Marc....does this mean that a 12V92 would NOT be a good candidate for for a 12V71 repower? Would it even fit?

Reason I ask is that there is one particular logging truck running up here in SW Oregon that has a 12V71T and he wants MORE power! Sounds sooss cool. Thanks for the update. Detroits forever! :)

I think a nice 450-500HP 3406 would work fine.

If you want a Detroit, there's always a Series 60.

I'll split it with ya :)

BTW that bus is one that had someone cross the median in front of it, he swerved to keep from turning the car to mush.

it took th hit in the front, and the rear hit a tree. both ends are racked, but the center, where the door is, is still straight.

If he'll turn loose of it cheap enough, I'll buy it to reconstruct.

I prefer the best sound ever: a Chrysler 392 Hemi running a 90/10 nitro/methanol mix (spiked with a little hydrazine) fed by an 8-71 blower & Hilborn mechanical fuel injection running 6000RPM through open zoomies. That'll make about 3000HP.

Now, stick it in a T-bucket or Fiat fuel altered. :)

That F-16 sounds like the one I use. I burned it onto a CD and installed a PA speaker in the engine compartment.
You should see the looks when I put the CD in, turn up the volume and hit the start button about half way thru the 25 second CD. All they see is a puff of white smoke (can't hear the 8-71 over the CD).
For our Orange Blossom Special II, we also burned a CD of a steam locomotive chugging as it picks up speed and a CD of the old stem whistle used on the locomotives. I guess I need another project to keep me out of trouble. LOL Jack

You don't have to!

I was sitting #2 for takeoff one year at Oshkosh when the Concorde took off. Same with the B-1 later (that time, I was in the display area). You could still feel the rumble in your chest from the After-burners when they were about 10,000 feet.

That's enough of an adrenaline rush for anybody to survive! The vicarious thrill of a lifetime.

My engine sounds during hangar flying began to sound suspiciously like a jet! ( I wonder why?)

One of my few fond memories of my old fire service days was trying to sleep in the dorm of Engine 6 and listening to Engine 2 respond to a call.

The houses were about 1 mile apart and if the wind was right you could hear the mighty 8V71N 350hp Detroit reach 2500 rpm rowing thru the gears.

Sounded soosss cool. The Detroit bellow was just as loud as the siren and air horn. That plus listening bits of radio traffic from the watch office...

....gave us a pretty good idea as to what was going on. Anyway, this was 30 years ago in another life. Detroit V8's sound soosss cooool. Thank you.

For an image editor try IrfanView, simple and free.
Google it and find a free download site.
IrfanView can resize the image and/or just the DPI to make it "smaller" for email or use here. can't beat the cost!

Peter's IrfanView recommendation is a good one.
It's more geeky than consumer junk (a good thing) so takes a different approach.
I used to use it all the time.
(when I used to use Windows all the time. :( )
