I'm sure ya'll have read the post about the baseball size hole in my muffler. Now obviously I need to replace said muffler with one that's not quite so perferated. Here's the issue, it's a matter of physics really I think. I have a muffler that about 4-5 inches think (I think) and I have an area to get in out that's about 2-3 inches thick. My trouble is obvious too much muffler not enough removal area. As I have determined from previous experince(removing tierod ends) sometimes there are little things that those who are more experinced than I know and do that make life soooooo much easier. I sure would like to know one of those "no do it like this and it will come right out" things would be. The only way I can see to get the thing out is to pull the engine; not something I'm looking forward to at all. I don't have a dolly and don't have any help really to get it done. Not to metion that I'd be winging it to get it done since I've never done one of these. So tell me what you think, I can't patch the muffler in place and I don't think I can get it out (unless one of you have one of those statements I spoke of). Maybe someone knows of a dolly around close to N.W. Ohio?????? |

Two dogs- If you have to cut it in little pieces to get it out, how in the world do you get the new one in? Just curious. Jim |

I sold my manuals but I would suspect that there was a panel on the inside of the bus to access the back of the engine |

There is Doug but it's about 4x12 and above all the shift linkages. That's how I got it loose from the manifold but it's no help getting it out. |

I there a way to enlarge your access panel. It would seem that that should be preferable to removing the engine and you'd be ready for the next muffler failure. |

Can you take the radiator off and get it out that way. That is how I would do it on my 4104. I have stampco strieght through mufflers on mine. Like Two Dogs said, it not that loyd. John |

A friend had a 4106 with an 8V92 in it. Straight 5" pipe out the back. You could hear him 3 miles away. NO LIE. NO EXAGERATION. These things do need a muffler. Jim |

Have to agree with Jim - if you are going to travel in polite company, 2 stroke Detroits need some attempt at a muffler. You might get away with a straight pipe on a 4-stroke but there's a reason they call 2 strokes screamers. |

There is some sort of casting on either the block or the head in the way to get it out behind the radiator. Tim metioned taking the rear fuel tank out. Looks like that's just infront of pulling the engine but not much. Does anyone have a muffler shrinker I could borrow. I normally keep mine next to my board strecher but I must have loaned it to someone cause it's not there now. |

Ok what do you guys think about this idea: I need to replace the head gaskets/O-rings etc. so I'm thinkin that if I pull the head I could get the gasket replaced, fix/replace my muffler, clean up my injectors, and anything else you guys think would be good to do at the time. I've got a cherry picker to get the head off with and I'll probably take it somewhere to have the valves and injectors done. What do ya think? |

Thats really a good idea Nick. Your bus has been sitting a while and who nows when the last time it has had the injectors gone through as well as the valves. especially since you said that you had some cylinder seals were leaking at the head. This can be a sign of poor injector performance and can cause unburned fuel to forced trough the seal. Not to mention that it will kill two birds with one stone by getting out your muffler. Best of luck Nick if you need anything don't hesitate to give a call. Tim |

My 8V92 did not originally have a muffler. I was told that the turbo would quiet it down enough so I would not need one. WRONG. As another poster indicated, it could be heard 5 miles away. I installed a muffler and it made a world of difference. Regardless of what anyone says, my experience is that you do need a muffler. Richard BTW, it did sound great, especially with the Jake turned on, but it about drove me crazy. And really bad when driving by one of the large retaining walls on the freeway. |

For what it's worth for postarities sake you still have to remove the linkages and the bracket that holds them to get the muffler out even after the head is off. Not that it's harder than pulling the engine but ya can't really tell (or I couldn't) if your going to have to or not till the head is off. Just to give the next guy a heads up. |

Once again to give the next guy a heads up. If ya want to keep the same type muffler on your silversides; pull the engine, it'll be a lot easier!!!!!! Man what a mess, all the likages but one are off and the *&%@$#@$ thing still aint give up the battle yet. However, I WILL WIN!!!!!!!!!! |

I WIN I WIN. Yesterday afternoon I finally got the muffler out!!!! I couldn't find a replacement (suprise suprise) so I'm having a stainless one built for me that will be a little narrower(2 inches) so if need be I can get it in and out next time and it won't take three days of prying pulling and cusing!!!!! All in all I'd say it's going to be a worth while project when I get everthing back togater. |

Good thinking Nick. Even a stainless muffler may not last another sixty years, |
