Now I know many of you don't run a 6-71 but most have at least heard of 'em (unlike many parts guys I've been dealing with). It's taken me 4 weeks to get to the point I am now in getting a head gasket to put back on my Detroit which is that a different one is on it's way. I have now found out that it is a low block 6-71 which obviously makes a difference since I've now gotten three gaskets sets that are for the other block that has individual fire rings o-rings etc. mine doesn't. Mine has a single head gasket just like a new car. I guess there's no point to this post other than to say for the archives that if your 6-71 has a single head gasket make sure you tell the parts guy it's a low block. At least tell 'em that if this works for me......I'll let ya know Wed. |

We here in washington State are pretty lucky. There are three of us here about 50 miles north of Seattle that are in the Crown bus conversion process. We have found a detroit diesel mechanic who more or less specialises in 6-71 Jimmy's. Little things like setting the rack and moving filters to make room for racors to assisting in a complete big cam cummins engine exhange suddenly became a little more bearable. I have seen on this website more than once "get a mechanic that knows DD".It is a real bummer to order a part and find out it is the wrong one. Good luck, J.B.P. |

Most times if you go to the DD guy WITH the engine number , you will get the correct parts, My boat 6-71 was made in 1944 , and it has worked every time. The "savings" from a non dealer , don't add up in terms of runaround time. FAST FRED |

I had a problem in L.A. a few years back needed a head gasket set for my 671. Got one from a none DDA place. Just before I installed it I was talking to my fried at DDA in Texas 2000 miles away, he told me to check the color as there had been a major recall on some sets. Sure enough I had one of the recalls, Boy was I lucky. The people who had sold me the gasket was a large truck repair shop in L.A. had no idea about the recall until they checked with DDA. John |

I don't have a good number on the block. The only thing I can find is a number on the curb side near the top of the block that has been stamped with a set of hand held stamps (I figure it should be cast in the block). At any rate the number is no good according to my DD dealer. As for getting a 2 cycle mechanic not only can I afford down time better than paying a mechanic but at the DD place their 2 cycle man was lost on this deal so I'm not sure I'd be anything but poorer if I had him help me. Is there anywhere on this thing I can get a number that can be run back to an engine number? |

The single piece head gasket was used on other engines as we have seen more than one. The last one on a 8V71 that had the single piece head gasket on one head and the now standard multi piece one on the other head of the same engine. A friend called the mfg. of the single piece head gasket with their part number as we though this would be an easier gasket to use and the mfg. had no record as that gasket ever being made by them. They even denied that they had ever produced such a thing, that was a major gasket supplier. If you have the groove for the perimeter ring gasket I would think you could probably use either. We did about 9 years ago and that engine is still running. It has crossed the US several times. My 2 cents worth. The numbers you need are not cast in the block they are stamped. I have found when I have ran into a replace block that did not have the numbers stamped in it that I could use the numbers of a like engine to get help from the DD parts dept. other wise they just seemed to throw their hands up in the air. I have been finding the local DD dealers, and DD inself less and less knowledgable and even wanting to be helpful. Just my personal experienes. |

Well for all who are following the muffler replacement drama. My engine is a low block I got a nice new set of gaskets, some of which I didn't need; water jacket stuff mostly. In addition my parts guy, who I will now buy anything I can from after all the work he went through to get the gaskets, said the detroit guy told him that they don't use numbers on engines that old so it wouldn't matter that my numbers are no good. Anyhow I got everything put back on last night except the muffler and got that on today and cranked it up. Sounds a lot better without a big hole in the muffler. I've still got a little adjustment to make on the throttle and put the tail pipe on but she cranks and runs as long as I can stand to hold the throttle with the exhaust all around me. I belive it smokes less too but I really can't tell yet with no tail pipe. |
