I'm toying with the idea of a two speed rear end on my '53-4104. My drive way's too steep and I fear for my clutch. No one around here seems to understand when I mention V drive. Any Ideas? Thanks for any thoughts....Cable

Two speed rear ends are not available for vee drive buses because the ring & pinion do not meet at a 90 degree angle. Therefore you can not swap in a truck rear end. Different story with T drive buses like Eagle, Prevost & MCI.

How about an underdrive unit between the trans. and diff.? Had one on an older truck, and it worked great. I just don't know where to find them.

There is a guy who offers an overdrive splitter for V730 automatics and there is a rare splitter for the 4104. But I have not heard of an underdrive in the 7 years I have been reading these and other boards.
What axle ratio do you have? There were two listed, 3.55 & 4.125. Mine has the 3.55 and it will run 75 MPH but hates hills. In addition, if you can, you should drive up the driveway, not back up it. In reverse, you are in a higher gear, somewhere between first & second.

Depending on the length of the drive shaft, you could install a brownie gearbox to either step up or step down the gearing.

I'd like to find a two-speed unit with 1 to 1 and 1.5 to 1 for my Flyer V drive. A four speed with .89, 1.1, 1.4 and 1.7 ratios would be the ultimate, but I haven't been able to find one yet. This would give approximate top speeds of 50, 62, 75 and 90 in each range. I'd never actually drive it that fast, but the 90 mph range would give the magic 1400 rpm at 60 mph, which translates into 8 to 9 mpg on the level.

Phil.
You've taped into the same idea I had. I read in Bus Conversions Mag, Sept 2004, Page 6, that he had a 4104 with a 4speed trans. and a 2 speed rear end. I'm guessing it is a gear box between the trans. and the diff. I also ran onto a website where there was a 4104 that also had a gear splitter. The picture of the drivers area showed the switch on the shifter. But, alas, I don't know how to reach either of them. Cable..'53-4104

I have a vague recollection that the splitter on a few rare 4104s is part of the clutch assembly.

The driveline on my Flyer is nearly 5 feet long, so extending the engine cradle framework to support an aux gearbox between the V730 and the differential is definately doable. Now it's a matter of finding the right gearbox in good condition.

Cable -

What you've seen/read regarding the 4104 4-spd transmission and 2-spd rear end is the optional "Hydrashift" package. VERY, VERY rare, and NO clutch parts are available for it anymore.

The two-speed splitter was in the clutch housing, not on the driveline.

Highway buses are NOT designed to go hill-climbing like a skoolie, reverse was primarily there just to back out of the stall at the depot. Trying to back one up a steep driveway is simply inviting clutch failure. Driving it forward up the same slope is likewise.

Sorry for the somber news. . .

Darn! Looks like I may have to move. I guess I'll get a P.O.Box. The house is temporary, the bus is forever. Thanks for your input guys.
