I recently completed rebuilding the dd3's on the drive axle after the many recommendations of the busnuts and not replacing the dd3 system. Now I have moved to the tag axle and still have the front axle to look at. Taking apart the tag brake chambers I've found the rubber boots on the shaft torn causing water to enter the chambers. The shafts & springs are eaten up. I can buy partswith no problem but since this is a single chamber can a new truck chamber replace it? Also what is a type 12 & type 16 mean? E-bay has several of these listed. What size is the ones on my mci-8? Thanks Ray |

the "types" refer to the square inch size of the diaphram in the chamber... (i think i heard this somewhere)... meaning the type 16 's diaphram has a surface area of 16 square inches... (area of a circle= pi r squared)...he 24's have 24 sq.inches of surface, etc....brake chambers are cheap... i bought single 30's at fleet pride here in victoria for around $25 each... |

Hello Ray. Buy them new at the local big truck parts supplier. Be absolutely sure to install the correct size. You change the strength if you change sizes, and any bigger on the tag will slide your tires on a light brake application. Two warnings: Beware that the maintenance manual states on page 4-27 (Nov, 74) "Brake chambers used at the front axle and rear trailing wheels are identical in construction." That does not neccessarily mean same size! Also, do not trust that what is installed on your coach now is correct. Previous owners and mechanics may have done whatever they had to to get it down the road to make more money... My parts book is elsewhere, let's see if anyone else knows the right size. happy coaching! buswarrior |

Thanks Guys! I appreciate the info. I hope someone knows the proper size. As I said earlier I know I can buy new parts and repair them but if I can get a complete new one from my local napa or truck store why not! I know with the dd3 chambers it was a different story. So I rebuilt it with diagraphms, piston, seals o rings etc. Also went with new inversion valve and the pull valve I can't remember the #. To many people talked me out of replacing with newer. Thanks again Ray |
