I've got a 98 cummings I'm working on that is having trouble idling. When you crank it up you can put it in gear and mash the throttle and let off and it will die every time. Do I have injector problems? It's got over 200K on it and never had any work on the fuel system. |

Nick, I have a 1997 12-valve Cummins ram 2500 with 300K plus miles on it and it runs like a top. I usually do all the repair work on my bus, trucks, and cars. However all I have done to my truck has been oil and filter changes, brakes and one clutch. I can only suggest you look at the shut-off solenoid, make sure it stays on when running. look at the lift pump that feeds the injection pump it should be putting out around 20 psi, look at the sense line from the turbo to the injection pump, and ensure you have fresh factory filters and good fuel. If the engine runs rough when it runs, then it is probably injector or pump problems. Do you have the stock exhaust? Mine has a catalytic converter/scrubber that I hear sometimes clogs up. Sorry I cannot be more specific and hope for the best, Juan 1953 PD4104-148 'Hound, and yes a 1997 Cummins, bolted to a Dodge 2500 4x4 5 speed stick. |

thanks Juan, it's got a banks system and 4" exhaust all the way back, not cat. It does run a little rough at idle. Stop seloniod is good but I haven't checked the fuel pressure. I'm leaning towards injectors though. It's had some dirty fuel in it's life that may have got past the filter. It's have valve cover gaskets and a tranny but that was my mother not the trucks fault. Thanks again for the input, I think it's time to at least have the injectors rebuilt. |
