I have been looking for a bus to convert for a year or so now and think I have found the one I want to get. It is a 86' Blue Bird transit 35' from a local guy that bought it a couple years ago at auction. He has 2 of the buses and they are just about the same except one has alcoas on the steer axle and the other has a fresh rebuild on the motor (I'm going for the fresh motor) the bodies are strait on both and both could use new tires(22.5) all around (they have been setting in a field for a couple years now). They have 3 speed auto tran.(allison) and I think the engines are what everyone calls a 318 detroit. The name plate says the rear end gear ratio is 4.61/1.The control panel has a couple of switches that say wabasco on them from what I have learned about busses this is an engine heater is that right? He wants $2200 for either of them. One thing that I'm a little confused about is the bus a/c the compressor is located beside the engine and is driven by a electric motor I'm not sure if its 12v,24v or 120v but I have trouble believing that anything short of 120v would pull it since it is so big. Most of the buses I have looked at where MCI MC9's and they all drove the compressor direct from the engine. I do think it has a inverter or a gen. somewhere onboard because the lighting is all fluorescent and there is a lot of it all the way down both sides of the interior. He said that everything worked a year ago the last time they where cranked I plan to hear it run and test drive before buying anyway . My questions for you guys are this. #1 Is $2200 a good price for the bus? #2 Have any of you ever heard of a/c working like this? #3 anything else I should look for on this bus to tell me if I should buy or not? #4 I know with the rear end ratio so high top end will be slow how expensive is it to re-gear and where would I find the parts? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Shawn |
