Hey, I'm just wondering if it's possible to add a turbo Diesel to the 6-71 Detriot I have in my MC5C, and if it's even worth it to look into. Thanks!

I have wondered the same thing for my 8V71N. It only has 14K on an out of frame overhaul, so I would hate to spend the coin for a rebuild to turbo specs.

In the hotrod world, there are such things as low pressure turbos that build less boost on higher compression engines (vs higher boost on lower compression).

I am wondering if I can add a turbo with a lower PSI wastegate setting to help with power and dealing with altitude (All roads outta here lead through the mountains).

Sean -

Is it time for a rebuild? To convert a stock 6V71 to a 6V71T properly requires a complete tear down and rebuild w/ turbo parts. Result: 275 hp, same as a stock 8V71.

If you really want some serious hp for the 5C, and it's time for a rebuild anyway, find yourself a Silver 6V92TA, non-DDEC, from a truck and rebuild it. By changing the injectors to 9G90s and adding the correct turbo, you can achieve a reliable 350 hp. You will have to upgrade the cooling system to handle the additional heat load, and the turbo will have to be off-set off the top of the engine, as the blower box is too low. Much easier to off-set the turbo than to try and modify the blower compartment.

Your transmission, which I'm guessing is an automatic, and probably an HT-740, can easily handle the larger HP 92.

Why spend the $$$ to add a turbo (and it's associated risk w/ a non-turbo block) on a barely-broken-in fresh overhaul when all it will really save you is about 3-5 minutes on the average climb over a 200 mile run. . .

Hey R.J., do you know exactly what is reqired for a 671 laydown in my Crown to be ready for a turbo addition? I read in my engine log for the 671 in my Crown that it was rebuilt 32,000 miles ago and the rebuilt again as they had put turbo pistons? in it and it smoked. I have a 4 valve head. It doesn't smoke now. Just a small puff for 20 seconds on start up and then pretty clean, even under way.

JB - IIRC, the turbo pistons are 17:1 compression ratio, the non-turbo are 18:1. Dunno exactly what's needed on your Crown, but maybe Geoff, our resident MUI DD expert, can jump in and share.

know of one 6 71 that had a turbo added with going to all of the trouble to change pistons. it runs extra good for a 6 71 in an 04

I dunno, - because it's there? Tis the hotrodder in me I guess. I would rather have more gears (gear splits for the auto would be nice).

Bob - thanks! We like it but my tinkering on it is being neglected in favor of projects on the non-moveable residence... :-) Maybe when the weather up here gets better.

RJ...Sadly overhaul was done 15K Miles ago so I guess I'll live with less power! Also, This bus is a Saudi and has an upgraded cooling system with 2 radiators already which I think is cool! Thanks for the info.

Some folks have added a propane injection system to save 5 min on a 500 mile up hill ride.

Could give you somthing to tinker with.

A more rational method would be to become a "Weight Nazi".

Every 100 lbs you build OUT of the intereior and load is another FREE hp you dont have to feed , or stop at the bottom of Rocky Top.

Back in '95 a 6-71 TA was about $12K

Now, all those trash trucks that used this engine will soon, if not already, be recycled for 4 strokes.

Will require replumbing for the intake, turbo and exhaust.

S-50 out of a current transit might be a better avenue to take!
