Just got a free '80 Model 10, and was wondering how to remove the vinyl lettering from the side... I bought a heat gun- is that the best way and if so what's the technique? |

yep...heat gun gets the vinol off fine, problem #2 is the adhesive that held the letters on..."adhesive remover"...gets 80% of that off(with a putty knife )...then liquid wrench & a lambs wool pad ...then windex to get the liquid wrench off & wax and a clean lambs wool pad on your buffer...the adheasive is 90% of the problem.. |

You can also buy what they call a rubber eraser which fits in a drill. Work very well. I usually heat the vinyl first with a heat gun, less chance of gauging then with a putty knife or razor blade. |

Product called "Goof Off" which will remove the adhesive, and if you're not careful, the paint under it too. |

Mayonaise, WD-40, "Purple Power", and acetone all take glue off. |

The rubber eraser wheel is the answer if the lettering has been on a while. |

Believe it or not but Easy Off oven cleaner will do the trick and not hurt paint. I've seen it done many times with this. FWIW, Rich |

Vinyl is best removed with a heat gun, when the vinyl is off, clean the area where the adhesive is with acetone, vinyl sign makers use a special appilcation fluid to do this, but at 34 bucks a gallon acetone is cheaper..... |

Thanks for the input. I think I'll take it slow- there's so much to do with so little money that maybe I'll take a letter off everytime I'm overwhelmed with all the rust, embedded crud, rust, bald tires, rust, stiff linkages, rust, you name it-it needs to be done stuff,.... Who knows, maybe I'll have all the letters off in a couple more days. |

Be VERY CAREFUL if you use Easy-Off oven cleaner - it can permanently damage the aluminum skin almost instantaneously. Another product that works well removing the adhesive is "Goo-Gone", available at the grocery store, WalMart, etc. Doesn't seem to harm aluminum, either. FWIW, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

Goo-gone works really well--I took a bunch of stickers off my truck's Reading utility body with it. Just keep it away from window gaskets! |

Rick- If you use the heat gun, practice on a spot that's not too noticeable. Too much heat can lift the paint as well as bake the vinyl.. I always look for the cheapest way... WD-40 takes off that glue, so does the food product. Just don't lick your fingers. Acetone is also a quick and easy remover, but be careful of the vapors... A small pint can of acetone will take off what the cheaper stuff doesn't, so you wouldn't need much to finish the job. |

After using the heat gun to remove the letters, clean the area with degreaser (NOT paint thinner)that body shops use for prepping for painting. It will remove the adhesive without damaging the paint. DaveD |
