My Mci 9 has been acting funny lately. Normally when it runs you can hear a sound coming from the fuel tank. It sounds like an electric fuel pump. I went out to start it today and it would not start. I finally got it to start with ether. It would barely run. when I would open the throttle wide open it would not effect it at all. It was just barely running, about to die at any moment. I went over to the fuel tank and I heard nothing. I stepped on the gas again and there was nothing there. Finally after about 3 minutes I was able to rev the engine up. It was acting fine. I walked over to the fuel tank and I heard the normal sound that sounds like an electric pump. My question is this: Do these buses have an electric pump up front? If so where is it located? I kind of thought that they may have a pump up front because of the long distance to the engine. If they do then I probably have an electrical problem or a worn out pump. If not, I don't have a clue what is wrong. Any advice would be great thanks! Andrew |

First, the MC-9 does not have an electric fuel pump near the fuel tank. What you are hearing is a vibration in the fuel lines created by the fuel flowing through them. Grab the fuel line above the tank with engine running, you will feel it. As far your lack of throttle response, 2 things come to mind. Do you have an air throttle? If so, you will not have throttle response until you have built up some air pressure. Are you in a cold climate with summer fuel? If fuel is gelled, as the engine warms up, fuel will flow better. There are probably other potential causes, but these 2 come to mind before my morning coffee. Jack |

My guess - what you hear is the "fuel return line" finally returning fuel to the tank perhaps you have a bad fuel line "check valve" - that will allow the fuel in the line to drain back overnite - making it hard or impossible to start without priming or either this could explain the poor running until the filters get filled up again - and finally give the engine enough fuel that the excess is returned to the tank - next time it happens - spin of the fuel filters and see if they are full ?? Is it a NJT which has a fuel pump with a switch at the gas tank? If so the pump there is a priming pump and may have been left on with the valve open. Some times you get some bad diesel and the system just will not provide pickup. Then all of a sudden the part clears out and runs fine. |
