there is a clicking sound in the wiring mess on the left of drivers seat in the panel that has switches for fast idle ac, heat ect. It is coming from what apears to be a relay. how much of this wiring is needed and what can I eliminate? everything seems to be non color coded. The wiring for that area and dash needs some serious attention. but I'd like to save that for when I'm in Florida |

On my bus, The relays act as part of an interlock. In a couple isolated cases, they just slave from the switch and handle the large current load. If you eliminate the relay, make sure you are not interferring with the interlock scheme. On my bus, the scheme has its wiring in almost every system on the bus in one way or another. Using switches in place of interlock relays would make your bus run like your car, with very little to protect the systems. (excepting for the idiot lights, which tend to use sensors which activated the interlock relays. The clicking sound may be a bad sensor, connection, wire, even another relay contact. Look at your "BOOK OF INSTRUCTIONS" and see what is active when the clicking occurs and go from there. cd |

I think this may be common in the 4905. As I recall a friend of mine had the same dropping relay. I will talk to him in a day or so and hopefully I will remember this and get back to you. |

I would be carful of what you remove in there . For every relay in there they work or is worked buy some other relay. Remove one and 3 things will stop working. Clicking ? When you flip a switch? Step on the brake? or just all by it self? Your bus could have any number of realys for opitions it could have been ordered with. I can tell you need most of every thing in there to work. The only ones you can do with out is the one for the driver heater and defroster if you dont want that to work. But I would keep it also. If you have not found out yet if you push down on the seat hight adjust you can lift the seat out and move it out of the way. Study the book learn what every thing does and make sure it works so you wont be costing to a stop in the middle of traffic with a dead bus. I found at least 4 brakers not working the over rule switch was bad all the low oil over temp sending units wires cut. The nutral start wires bypassed. And my bus still made the drive home. I was just lucky. Brian 4905 Klamath Falls Oregon |

It just clicks on it's own. my heater/defroster motor does not work at this time. If I can get it in the shop today I'll check that out while there checking brakes. |

Try turning on the light or defrost fan, or A/c and see if the clicking goes away. If it does that sound is a relay going on and off cause your voltage reg is turing on off cause there is not enough load for that huge Alternator. I just leave my lights on all of the time and the clicking goes away. |

Use a great deal of discression in doing any changes to the electric panels. Most clicking I have found is a automatic reset circuit breaker. I'm betting there is no relay problem. Turn off the battery switch take out the driver's seat, and remove the driver's control panel cover. Find something to kneel on, turn the battery switch back on and just look for the clicking. A test lite with a 24 volt bulb would be nice. A GM wiring diagram/manual is also required. Frank in Idaho |

A cheep 24 volt test light. I use a light and holder from one the seats I have it mounted in my panel with a 24" lead of wire coming off of it with the end soddered . I use that for my test light . Simple its always there and it was free. Brian 4905 Klamath Falls Oregon |

How do you check the 8 pronged relays to see if they are working---example defroster one on 1981 Prevost |
