I'm "on the road again". I ran out of fuel had a battery that was shot (bought new in june). took it to the mechanic for oil change, fluid check, voltage reulator repair and a good going over before I leave next week. Just seems strange that a couple of things happen together right after you do something else to improve it then automaticly think thats what went bad. I've always looked at the last think I worked on when I have a problem. and acording to my calculations I should have had fuel left. I wonder if the odometer and speed ometer are off that much since I put the taller tires on? |

Ron - You have a 4905 that came stock with a 165 gallon fuel tank. Be safe, figure 140 of that is useable. 140 gallons at 5 mpg (again, being safe!) equals 700 miles. Add in fudge time for idling, running around town, genset operation, etc. and you should be ok. Or, just be ultra-conservative and figure on adding fuel every 500 miles, period. As you've discovered, running out of fuel w/ a Detroit is NOT fun. . . HTH, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

Both of my buses have operating and reasonably accurate fuel guages. I still rely on the method RJ outlines, having run it low my first trip out several yrs. ago and lost prime on a steep back-up. |

actualy my tank is only 135 gal. but I was getting 8.33 mpg so I figured 900 miles I need a refuel and always worked out but from now on unless special circumstances (no money) I'll fill up every 5 or 600 miles. |

I hear it was an option only for 165. the tag on my fuel door says 165 gal. but jj said mine was only 135 because it didn't come all the way from one side to the other. It's about 2 ft short of drivers side. but who am I to know? may have been replaced. |

Hmmmm. . . Now you've got me curious, never heard of a 4905 w/ a tank smaller than the OEM 165 gallon unit. Any way you could snake a tape measure in there to measure the tanks LxWxH so we could crunch the numbers and figure it out? TIA, |

After working on far to many long neglected machines I see nothing remarkable about multipull failure breakdowns. Some times they are related (how accurate is a electric fuel guage when your battery voltage is run way down). They are not even alway related or contribute to each others untimely failure. The odds also are proportal to the number of impending faults. Unlike a human doctors work, machines are not prone to healing themselves if given enough time and placibos and they are unresponsive to belief. Good thing too or we would have a lot more cwacks than doctors ! |

RJ, my 4905 had the small tank, always wished it had the bigger one that was an option. Ordered specifically for duty in Hawaii, I can see why I suppose. It is easy to tell, there is a tag on the end of the fuel tank with gallons on it, and as said, you got lots of room on the drivers side between the outside of the buss and the end of the tank. I used the space to carry four propane bottles. |

speaking of fuel gauges. How do you add a sender to the tank if there is no room.or better phrased, how do you drill a new opening in tank for a sender.? morgan www.outreachacrossamerica.com |

Mclough, Log onto the Yahoo group GM Busnuts, go to the files section & look at the file I put there on fuel guage. It tells how I drilled my tank and installed a fuel guage sender and pickup/vent tubes for my generator and Webasto. It also tells how I built a digital fuel guage that reads gallons & tenths left. The guage has worked superbly for about 18,000 miles & maybe saved me from a disaster when a fuel line, between the heads broke, because of the guage I noticed exessive fuel use. Further questions email me directly @ lieblerj@alltel.net. Regards jerry 4107 1120 |
