March 10, 2005 - Driver sentenced for dumping

The driver for the Dave Matthews Band was sentenced to fines and community service after he pleaded guilty to dumping 800 pounds of human waste onto tour boat passengers as the band's motorcoach crossed a bridge in Chicago last summer.

Stefan A. Wohl was put on 18 months' probation. His employer suspended him without pay after the Aug. 8 incident. Wohl, 42, was also ordered to pay the Friends of the Chicago River $10,000 and perform 150 hours of community service in his hometown of Selma, TX, as part of the agreement reached with the state's attorney's office.

Wohl refused to comment after the hearing. He had originally denied any wrongdoing, then turned himself in after a security camera captured him emptying the contents of the coach's septic tank into the river. He was charged with misdemeanor counts of reckless conduct and discharging contaminants to cause water pollution.

Many of the 100-plus passengers on the Chicago's Little Lady architectural tour boat were covered with raw sewage.
Nobody was hospitalized. Nobody had any broken bones, and I personally verified that no one had any long-term illness or lasting effects from it, says Wohl's attorney.

The band donated $50,000 to the Friends of the Chicago River and $50,000 to the Chicago Park District last year and vowed Wednesday to continue making amends. Lawsuits against the band and Wohl have been filed by one passenger; the boat's operators, Mercury Skyline Yacht Charters, and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. Those suits are still pending.

Wohl "is not expected to drive for the band in the future," says band spokesman John Vlautin "

"Molly Peterson 82, had been here on vacation from home in Elizabeth, NJ,
said under oath:
"I looked up from the deck just as it all happened and knew instantly I
was going to be in a world of shit. Even worse than at my daughter's house
back home".

Joseph Ingersol 60, from Chicago and also a passenger that day, testified:
"To me, it was just another crappy day in Chicago". "

NOW, I'd really like to see how they installed a SEPTIC SYSTEM in the bay of a bus. Now that is something to see.

I do not see any real problem here. The water quality of the Chicago River was obviously IMPROVED by this action. They should have been given an award or medal. :-) :-)

Yes,
Part of the river flowed past a plant I used to work at. The river was filthy.

We had to run a waste water system before the water we used could be discharged back into the river. I was amazed how you could actually see the clean water we discharged flow into the murky muck of the Chicago river and mix back into yuk again.

One of the workers told me there is an area of this filthy swamp where the city yards would cut up the cattle for meat. The remains would be discarded into the river. They did this for years. I was told that the remains still bubble up from deteriorating remains even today. They were never required to clean up their polution when they were shut down.

Our screens for catching rubbish on our cooling water used to catch used hypo needles, you know, shots from medical centers and hospitals. Today that brings up concerns because of Aids and other blood borne sickness.

That is a scary river if you think about it but you better not dump your "cleaner than the river" black water in it! The fine will be "for adding cleaner water to the river contaminating the poluted waters causing them to be diluted to a better level of clean".
