I just recently purchased a champion bus that runs on CNG. I was wondering if its possible to convert the fuel system to run both CNG as well as Diesel?

My friend Dans 60' runs on diesel as well as Bio fuel (i think its called Bio fuel? the Veggie oil).
Would it be possible to convert this CNG system to be switched to Diesel if a tank was constructed? If anyone has any info or could help me with this question it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Scott

I dont think so , Does it have spark plugs if so no way easy. Look for a replacement motor that is a diesel.

It kinda like buying one of them buses that runs off the over head wire and has only electric motors for drive. He may have a good parts bus for axles rear end if it has hwy gears and tires a trans . Or he will be way ahead of us in 20 years when you can buy CNG at stations everywhere. But going on what he posted he had no idea what he was buying:-( would be my guess.
May be able to convert it to LPG but ether way CNG or LPG I bet it gets sucked MPG.
I realy think even a 1st time bus buyer should stay a way from any city type bus. BUY A HWY COACH with a diesel. You have real size bays a fuel tank bigger then 60 gals good road speed, And if you ever want to resell you can sell it and not lose as much.
You should have asked that here before you bought sorry to tell you all the bad news .
Maybe some one here knows somthing that may help and you will be fine.

CNG/LPG has less volumetric power compared to diesel or gasoline... It's a great alternative and very clean burning fuel, but the hassle of getting it is going to outweigh the cost of just buying diesel....

Brian....

I'm a first timer, and bought a New Flyer D60 city transit bus... the 60 foot kind. High floor model with lots of room underneath... I personally LOVE the thing. :-) But then, as my best friend puts it... I'm just a kooky bastard. hehehe

As long as you stay away from the low floor models... things should work out fine. But it's true that highway coaches are MUCH better to have to start with.... but... city transits are so much cheaper (and in my case, somewhat unique)!

Cheers!

Won't most CNG vehicles burn propane with minor tweaks? I know I saw a CNG truck (Dodge van) filling with LP a while back...the guy said he'd been using LP (per his boss's instructions) for 2 years & ~45,000 miles with no problems.

Mac,
I am also a first time bus owner . You are right most city buses are cheaper to buy up front but I think the extra work in most to get tanks and storage will soon out weigh the low cost.
Hwy Coaches can be had for a deal if you look. I traded a 1968 travel trailer I payed $900 for my 4905 with 350K miles on it.
I was lucky and ended up on some boards and asked a few questions and had lots of good help and help from Rayhound with the mc5.
I feel bad for scott if he did not know what type of fuel it run on and it has motor that will not run on diesel a bad start to a newbe busnut.

I had a bus that I converted to propane back in the 80's, and it was well worth the trouble to do it. Clean burning, virtually zero engine wear, etc.

BUT...

That was also during a period of time I could toodle down to Mexico and fill my 250 gallons worth of tanks for ten cents a gallon...that's right, 250 gallons for twenty five bucks... then drive on a nice thousand mile trip getting a whopping 4MPG and not care.

I'd NEVER do it these days. The cost of LPG is comparable to the cost of diesel these days-hovering around two bucks or more per gallon- Diesel has 15% more energy per gallon than gasoline which has 15% more energy per gallon than propane which has 15% more energy per gallon than CNG (roughly of course, but not far off)
...which means that for a given engine size you'll get about the same difference in horsepower...that coupled with giant tanks required, horrible mileage, etc I think anyone trying to be serious about LPG or CNG for a conversion bus is totally nuts.

...but then this is all about being a bus nut, right?

I LOVE my current 10MPG diesel, and I LOVE not having to take 6% grades at 5mph like I did in the propane bus.....

Just my 2cents worth...
