Is there asbestos in the floor tiles of the PD-4106? a bus enthusiast is telling me that GM used asbestos in the 04 & 06. If this is true it would be news to me. Is there any truth to this? |

First of all, the "A" word and old buses should never be mentioned in the same sentence. When I stripped out my Eagle, I found the floor and the walls in the rear above the engine was lined with it. |

my dad just passed away from that dreaded word. he worked on heating and air conditioning equipment for 30 + years. Most old water lines, ac pipes heat pipes have it and many floor tiles were made of it. does YOUR old 4104 dunno, but if you remove them wear a mask etc. and you cant just dump them in dumpster. they are now considered hazardous waste. morgan www.outreachacrossamerica.com |

Anyone else care to comment? I searched the board but did not find any useful information on the subject. I regret hearing about your dad Mclough. Next I will try Google. |

Try this: http://www.google.com/search?num=30&hl=en&newwindow=1&c2coff=1&safe=off&q=asbestos+linoleu m and here: http://forum.doityourself.com/archive/index.php/t-18529.html Commercial grade of that era were likely all made the same. A. It's the dust that can be of harm B. Don't breath the dust. C. Don't tell -anyone- you're taking our asbestos because you don't know if it is and as a "do it yourselfer" you aren't required to know. |

Before we get into a panic, there are many forms of asbestos. The blue asbestos was the one used in heat pipe insulation and is the worst. When blue was discovered to be harmful, other forms such as solid sheet asbestos, that were made from white asbestos, were not deemed to be as dangerous. However, since it is the fine spore type fibers which cause the asbestosis, I would strongly recommend not messing with any form of asbestos which is in a dusting form. I would imagine that tiles which have an asbestos content would be pretty safe unless they are powdering. But then again, any powdering substance could be unhealthy to breathe. Peter. |
