I need to send a money order from the US to Canada for some bus parts in Canadian funds. I've been to the Bank and Post Office and called everyone else I can think of but no one seems to know anything. Has anyone done this.
Thanks
Jerry

Your bank can write you a bank draft that you can send to parts supplier....real easy!!

Been there, done that (Canada to USA)

I used to send money to my daughter when she was attending college in Canada. (Hmmmm, doesn't that sound familiar to folk w/ college-aged kids!)

All I did was go to my bank and get a cashier's check in US funds, and when she received it, she'd take it to her Canadian bank, who would handle that day's exchange rate right at the teller window as she made her deposit.

I would think the seller's bank should be able to do the same thing. Both of you should agree that there might be a slight difference in the actual amount of the exchange when it takes place, and that small amount is agreeable to both parties.

Yesterday the exchange was $1.24CDN to $1.00US, but it varies from day-to-day.

I just bought some boat wire form Canada, and they took Pay Pal. Credit card is also an excellent idea.

Presuming the seller is not tuned into PayPal or Credit Card payments, follow RJ's course, it works. As he says, there may be a day to day fluctuation of exchange rate, but probby in his favor under the current movement, so he won't mind.

I just did this a month ago for a allison ht70 auto trans. I went through all the wrong answers seemed like many people had one and ended up finding out that a postal money order was fine. I sent it they got their money on the other end and I have my transmission.

Western Union. You can use www.bidpay.com to buy one or go to a western union office.

Thank you for so much conversation and so little information.
Western union told me they do not send money orders, they wire money and it costs a lot.
This is a person not a business so I can't use my credit card.
And, a certain color money order, the post office just laughed.
SO,, I think I'll send a postal money order for a little more than the amount and hope like hell he cashes it and sends me my stuff.
Thanks (really this time)

Well Western Union's web site *says* that they do money orders:
http://www.westernunion.com/info/osMoneyOrder.asp

I've been following this because I need to do the same. Finding a dang 'Agent Office' is a big hassle though.

JW Campbell: Does your 1st sentence in your last post represent a response to everyone that responded here? I saw at least 3 viable methods suggested, and yes, they all cost money unless u want to send him your personal check, which as Mel says, he can cash. We haven't managed to completely alienate the Canadians yet: they will take our money, just like we will gladly take theirs.

Converting US dollars to Canadian in Canada is easy. Any bank will do it. Because it's so easy in Canada, Canadians sometimes don't realize that it's more complicated to do so in the USA. All you need to do is agree on the applicable exchange rate with the seller, as this fluctuates and send the equivalent amount in US dollars. The seller may also have a US dollar bank account, in which case he may prefer US dollars anyway.

Hi Jerry,

Seems your faith in exchanging $US to $CDN on a bulletin board system has become somewhat jaded. Pshaw! Let me try to restore that faith!!

Email me off the board. I'll give you an email address where you can send me your $US into my $US PayPal account, which you'll be receipted for immediately via automatic email, and I'll happily retreive a $CDN money order (at an exchange rate that's acceptable to you) and send it to your party in Canada.

I will email you a scanned copy of the "sender" portion of the money order immediately and send off the paper copy via snail mail.

There, is that an actual solution you can live with?

Hi Ian,
Thanks for your kind offer to help. I believe as David said, Canada isn't that far away. I think I'm making a bigger deal of this than is necessary.
My comment was just a little stick to stir the pot. I guess I should have put a little smiley face there. Thank you all for your effort. I'll let you know the outcome.
