I have a chance to get some new Dynasty UPS 12-270 batteries at a good price. They are sealed AGM batteries and weigh about 57 pounds each. Is there any reason that these will not work as house batteries to replace my worn out golf cart collection?

12 as in 12VDC? and 270 as in 270 Amp Hours? Might be a bit smallish, but other than that there should be no reason they will not work. Perhaps someone else with more experience with large battery banks can help you more than I....JJ

Presuming the same figures as JJ, 1 battery you are going to get abt. 23% more power from just 1 of these as you are 2 Trojan T-105 (which would yield 12v@220ah.

Now, specific to Dynasty, made by Johnson Control Co., if they are new, go for it if you like the price. If they are cell tower take-outs, I would pass on the "deal". Experience speaks, I tried 8 of them, take outs, 7 failed within 2 months. Also, something does not ring true w/ the weight. The ones I had were super Gp31 and weighed 87# each, rated at 235ah. However, I have friends that have gotten 3-4 yrs. from Dynasty sets of take outs at 15-20 bucks each.

You will appreciate the advantages of them over flooded cell batteries: no mess, no gassing, no maintenance (except top cleaning), quicker recharge capability, better discharge curve. AGM's are the thoroughbreds while flooded cells are the donkeys, or more appropriately, dinosaurs.

I replaced my used Dynastys with MK (Deka) Gp 31, 230ah, @ $150ea a yr. ago. I built brass buss bars to create the bank, as mine are the flat-top models with threaded insert terminals.

The Guy says they are new. He has five of them that I would use to replace my 6 golf cart bats. Even 5 is overkill for me.

If u have a 12v system, ure doubling your battery bank capacity over the 6 carts, presuming Trojan. If u have Exide, your more than doubling. If memory serves me right the MSRP on the Dynasty 235 was $287.and sold for 200-225 new. Used are usually distinguishable by installer markings of install dates, location #s, test dates, etc.

I thought that 2 of these in parallel would end up being roughly equal to 2 6 volt golf cart bats in series in total capacity. These are UPS batteries. They retail for $150+ but seem to be available on the web for around $110.

I have 4 off these in my coach. They will run my 21 C.F. house refig. for about 24 hours. with a 50% discharge. I have had them in my coach for 4 years. And they were not new when I got them. They cost new about $300. I wish I had 1 more in my coach.

Technically, UPS style batteries are manufactured for float service. i.e. designed to set for long periods of time at float and only discharged when there is a power failure. Even then, there is generally a standby genset that comes on within a few seconds to provide power, so they (the batteries) generally do not get deep discharges. IIRC the Johnson Dynasty’s were rated for about 100 deep discharges and a five year life span for UPS applications.
Having said all that, I would not hesitate to use them as house batteries if the price is right. I used to use them by the hundreds for UPS applications and based on that experience I would expect them to last at least three years and probably five years.

Lin: If the ones u are considering are truly 270ah (and I noted earlier that the weight of the battery does not ring true w/ the 235ah that I had) and u use them parallel, the ah capacity is cumulative for a 12v system, yielding 540 ah with 2 batts. The golf carts in series are cumulative to voltage, as a set of 2, not amperage, so you end up with 12v, 220ah. 5 of the dynasty 12v in parallel ylds. 1350ah. 6 of the golf carts, if Trojan, series/parallel for 12v ylds 660 ah. I think my math is correct.

My MK's (Deka) are deep cycles, not UPS, rated 235ah and weigh 88# ea. Lifeline makes a battery almost identical to my MK's and ah/weight ratio is almost identical.

Well I bought the 5 batteries he had. The are not anywhere near 270ah. Actually, they are only 75ah. The battery model number is UPS 12-270, but the 270 stands for WPC (watts per cell, I think). Therefore, I guess I end up with a mere 375ah, but that will be fine for now. He only charged $40. each and I really want to try the AGM.

Lin- that's not bad, BUT remember this...Be very cautious as you approach the final stages of installation,' cuz 375 Amps can be very hazardous. With a varactor added you can weld 1/2" plate steel with that much amperage...or blow your fingers off your hand if they are in the way of a dead short. Congrats, and good luck...JJ

I tried a bunch of used AGM's that came from a cel site once. The problem I found was that most of the 150 lb monsters had been fried by overcharging and general abuse. Out of 20 that I aquired at hernia prices. 19 were hauled to the recycle center at the dump and the other one someone actually stole out of the back of my pickup one day at K-Mart...

Not that that was planned.. <grin>....
