This is what I get for being proactive! Dropped the pan today to service the trans, to find a hand full of metal in the bottom of the pan. This was a trans that has been running fine with no problems at all. After several phone calls to allison experts the conculsion they came to was the thruster bearing 1 of 2 was the metal in the pan. That it was a matter of time for the trans to fail anywhere from around the block to Japan who knows. I don't like taking that big of a change even though 2 dogs thinks different. Now the big question how hard is it to R and R the allison V730 in a transit? It so happens I have an AMG sitting in my driveway with the same trans. For the ones that followed our trip home from Tx with the new rts. Our mechanic checked the engine out completely and only had to replace the 6 rocker arms on the back bank behind the seat. Otherwise clean bill of health. sorry 2 dogs

Tony
It really isn't a big job to R & R a V730. Make a metal jig to attach to the 3 large bolt holes on the side just behind the convertor and a chain to about the 3rd bolt toward the engine on the top of the convertor. Hook to a one armed crane and you will have no problem doing it yourself. The tranny weighs about 1000 lbs so it is heavy. Be careful. Disconnect the oil and water lines, drive shaft, cooler, shifter and any wires for speedo etc. When you separate it from the engine there will be oil in the flywheel housing so have a pan ready to catch it. You might want to dyno the new V730 before you go to the work of installing it. Most bus rebuilders will do it for a couple of hundred dollars. Better then to pull it out after because it didn't work. Good luck. Bill

Attention Mr. Two Dogs- I wanted to personally thank you for all your support and words of wisdom that you have provided my husband and myself. We have had a wonderful time with our coach, and will continue to do so. Granted, there have been a few challanges. We have used this board to LEARN and ask advise from others.... We are not extremely knowledgeable, but we are learning as we go. Again.. Thank you for your support.

I love my 4 speed... auto. I like to row my own some but I am glad I have the auto most of the time. (Hey, I am on vacation afterall!) Places like Las Vegas Blvd provide enough driving entertainment without working the thigh-master. Now back to what we do best! Surfin

It's not hard to pull a V730 from an RTS, you should first take off the bumper and side panel to get good access. I used a transmission jack and made some plates that would bolt to the transmission and jack while holding the transmission balanced on the jack. Then it was simply a matter of unbolting it.
When installing the replacement transmission, be sure to change the transmission cooler at the same time as the old one will have metal in it from the failed transmission. Also flush the lines.
