Mystic Seaport is a great place to learn about whaling. We stayed at Rocky Neck State Campground when we visited there.

Seaport Campground in Mystic is also nice. It's a level, easy parking field. It's close to the casinos as well as the seaport. The owners and workers were very friendly and helpful. It's clean and they had some great stuff for kids like a nice playground area and miniature golfing.
