Gooseneck State Park, Utah Like a beautiful boon dock place to camp? Try Gooseneck State Park in southeastern Utah’s Monument Valley area. It has been about 6 years since I was last there but at that time the park consisted of just a few picnic tables - a few with shelters and a large outhouse. I don’t believe there was any water nor, dump station. Although the facilities were sparse the view was fantastic! You can camp within about 30 feet of a miniature Grand Canyon. The canyon is formed by the San Juan river – a contributory of Glen Canyon & Lake Powell areas. The park is located on a gooseneck of the meandering San Juan river (hence I’d guess the name of the State Park). I’m not sure how high above the river the State Park is but the canoe and rafts that occasionally go by look to be about 2” big. Like a lot of this region, the nighttime view of the stars is unbelievable. Even my mother with cataracts was able to make out some of the stars from inside our motor home with our lights on! There are all kinds of beautiful sights to see in this area and finding the park is not difficult. I’m looking at a Rand McNally road atlas like I found it the first time. From Mexican Hat on route 163 go north a few miles and get onto 261. Looks like just a short distance and turn onto route 316. This road dead-ends at Goose Neck State park in a couple more miles and I believe there were easy signs to see and follow. I had no problem maneuvering my, at that time, 29’ class A RV with 4x8 motorcycle trailer down these slightly bumpy but paved roads and into the park. If I remember correctly once you entered the park it was a large circle with “flat areas” many with picnic tables to camp at. |
