I will be in San Diego near the end of June with my wife, 11 year old son and 13 year old daughter. I would like to hear the experiences of others, comparisons and recommendations for campgrounds in or near San Diego. We have found and are considering Campland on Mission Bay, De Anza or the Chula Vista RV Park. We will be driving in from Denver and staying while my 13 year old daughter participates in a "SeaCamp" in the Mission Bay area. She will be in a dorm during her camp while the rest of us stay in the bus at some nearby RV park.

Any positive or "stay away" recommendations as well as comparisons nearby campgrounds is appreciated.

I used to live in SD and stored my RV at De Anza. Also visted friends who lived in Campland for the winter rates. So I know both places.

Chula Vista is a bit of a drive from Mission Bay. Probably a lot further than it may appear on the mapping you are looking at. If your daughter will be in the MB area, you'll want to be nearby. So, I'd stay in Campland or De Anza if I were you. Both are nice and are basically right next to each other with the river outlet in between them.

There is a municple golf course right next to De Anza too. Short holes, cheap, and has night golf and a range. Lots to do on the Bay, sail, windsurf, suntan, skate the boardwalk etc. I prefer not to swim in the bay anymore, though. I kept getting sick. (pollution sux) If you want to swim, use one of the pools or take a short drive down Grand Ave. to the open ocean. (You'll have a toad? - streets/alleys are crowded and narrow around the densely populated beach!)

My only bad experience was getting my bike ripped off while my RV was in storage in De Anza. It is a big city, and the beach attracts all sorts of dirtballs. Both campgrounds have open entrances 24/7 so anyone can get inside. I don't think you will have trouble, but just be safe and lock stuff and don't be easy prey for the scumbags.

You'll enjoy your stay, I am sure. Though I never stayed in them, Campland has some luxury sites with hot tubs if you want to pay big bucks.

Cheers,
Scott

The KOA camp in Chula Vista is GREAT! I was there as a full timer for 18 months, they treat you like a king. Great dog walk, pool, hot tub, rec. room, laundry.... everything but a restaurant.
Chula Vista is a very short dirve to any place in San Diego; airport, down town, zoo, Tijuana, etc.

I just stayed (1/1/05) at both the KOA and Campland. KOA definitely a nicer park with more site space. Campland is really convienent to quite a few areas if you like biking around. Some sites at Campland are quite cramped. Both parks clean and kept up with gate security. Campland has a Direcway wifi system that did not work well for me.

I have stayed at the RV park and marina at Chula Vista. It's been quite a while ago but it was on par with the KOA.

Staying in the San Diego KOA tonight and storing the bus on a no services lot there for 10 days duing a cruise. Its the nicest KOA I have ever seen.

AND THE BIG QUESTION ON THIS BOARD. THERE IS AN OLD 4905 CONVERSION WITH OLD POOR PAINT AND EXTERIOR IN STORAGE DURING A CRUISE. ONE THAT STUCK UP RV PARKS WOULD NOT ACCEPT FOR SURE. SO THIS CAMPGROUND IS BUS FRIENDLY.

2005-2006 Rates $36/ night with full hookups, 50Amp. 10% discount with $14 KOA card.
Limited monthly spaces. None in summer.
