USFS/BLM Lands - Most of the land from Silverton north to Red Mountain Pass is available for FREE camping but not much is accessible by buses - there is a spot just about a mile north of Silverton on west side of highway a couple thousand feet off the highway (can't remember the name of the lake the road goes to) that has good access and dispersed creekfront camping - I have been going there for years and it has become more developed than its prior primitive state - it's still beautiful and when not busy there are animals in the campground every night - although it's not always crowded (still better than the campgound in town) the word has gotten out and during the holidays it can be fairly full - Silverton has become quite the tourist trap mainly due to the Steam Narrow Gauge RR - Rumor is they are going to start charging $5 per night, when I don't know
